You don't have to scan it, you just have to enter the system. So if you just repeatedly enter and then exit the system, you have a 63% chance to get it within the first 200 attempts.
Did you send the scientist off to investigate?
I killed the Worm because it later on spawned a Dimensional Horror in my main system. So much for love after it pulled that trick on me. (also the racial boosts can be aplied to your whole species, not only your homeworld, if you so wish)
This may sound cold but my intention from the very beginning was to exploit the Worms wisdom and recources. To study it, rather than embrace it. The buildings were a fine addition to my collection and with them my empire started to prosper even more. When the time came to see the Worm itself I was given a choice: either to embrace it or to study it (effectively meaning that it spawned a D. Horror). I chose the studying option as I didn't want to be controlled by some maniacal Worm-thing that had killed some of my leaders and that was forming a cult to worship it. Obviously it didn't like my desision and tried to fight me. It took over my capital-system but I came back with my doom-stack-fleet and utterly crushed it.
So I have concluded: the Worm-event gives you lots of benefits (special buildings, resources and the total conversion of your race IF you want to). But then again, if you're not looking to change your race the only option left is to kill the Worm.
Console is your friend. After a bunch of retries I just used the console command. Forgot which one, but you can find it easily on the internets.
The event seems to have an incredibly small, like, .05% to trigger at any black hole, but once it tirggers once, the trigger % chance of any ship entering that same black hole system seems to grow and grow the more events you go through. Then, once you go through the first chain, it depends on other factors, which I'm not going to spoil. I think the first trigger has to be from a 4+ science ship, but any other ship afterwards will do. I guess I got a bit lucky this run as the black hole system it spawned in is a very active route for ships, as it's a jump point from one ring to another and also the fastest path to a colony/lots of delicious resources.
I actually just got an event to trigger with my doomstack fleet (as the entered the system, of course) while they were chasing down pirates.
