Nobody wants to join my federation!

I just researched the ability to form federations and I am on decent terms with three other races (opinion in the 80-120 range -- is that a lot, even?). By default, though, they have a -50 to joining at all, then another -30 or so because we have different war opinions, and their high opinion of me only gives me, like, a plus eight.

Is there something obvious I should be doing? Do I just need to shovel unimaginable sums of money and energy at these people until they decide they like me?

Sometimes you just have incompatible neighbors! Search out Federation Builder species, they give out something like a +50-100 for Federation invitations.

It helps, but capped at +100 opinion, IIRC (which gives +10 bonus). What you usually need is someone with similiar worldview (ethics & policies).

A mutual rival/enemy/threat always helps =D

Also if you are far from each other they will be less inclined to join you

Thanks all, I just managed to successfully get one race (the foxes) to join my federation thanks to your suggestions...the problem now, though, is that even though the other races around me seem to like me a lot, they refuse (as in, -1000) to join my federation so long as the foxes are in the federation.

Will the other races eventually come around on this, or am I just screwed and have to find a way to get rid of the foxes?

Each race is unique, you cant ask for a race to join your federation if they are a fanatical purifier and you are a xenophile 'kinda' guy

If other races have similiar policies - possible. Only thing you can do here is try making them associates and hope for the best.

If they don't like a member of your federation, they will refuse to join it.
