It has its upsides, easier to explore and defend, but easier to get boxed in.

I play it with only a couple other races when I just want to plow through the tech tree of a new mod.

It can make conquest much more straight-forward. The difference when in a Ring Galaxy is that you need to make sure nobody cages you in, especially early on. You need to be ready to push for territory, usually by taking it from neighbors. Ring Galaxies force you into conflicts, because without conflict you're probably going to be taken out by a bigger, more advanced empire.

i played on a ring galaxy once. was an interesting experience, but felt a bit "gamey". i had 3 fallen empires in that galaxy, so the ring was pretty much divided into 3 isolated segments that had no contact at all. well, until i was big enoug to beat up the fallen empire roadblocks.

This would probably be a great map for a PvP tourney or something to that effect.

If you're using wormholes, you can bypass smaller empires (and fallen ones) in the ring once you have increased it's range the first time.
