Catching up
So I'm stuck as a vassal to this alien scum and I'm trying to catch up to his fleet power and tech level so I can fight my way out of this. I'm slowly catching up and that scum I'm a vassal to is in a bit of a war with a few small empires which is keeping him occupied.

The victory goal is set to domination, and I know I'll eventually need to fight for independence. Any suggestions on what I should do right now?

I'm planning on just building up and waiting for an opportunity.

Carefully watch to make sure that they don't start integrating you because they can and will.

Will it just start happening right away or will it give me a choice to integrate or die?

Will just happen. If you miss that warning (standard one: "empire x started to integrate empire y") end-game screen will be quite a surprise too.

Thats what i had to do one time. I started as a protectorate and they out teched me fast and i slipped in to Vassalhood. Still they were the biggest kid on my block so i used the time to upgrade my planets to their highest capacity at the time and then build a decent fleet. Was kinda suprised when i engaged their slightly more powerfull navy 12K to 10K and completly waloped them.

Integration usually takes around 100 months and gives you plenty of warning when it's occuring. My suggestion is to either find an ally, or build up your defenses enough to offset anything powerful they can throw at you. I usually stuff my worlds with fortresses as soon as I get them. With the right tech and configuration, you can mow through an enemy fleet before they even get a shot at your spaceport.

You can effectively set the conditions by which the enemy fights in your solar system. You can use repair nanobots to make your ships repair during combat, shield capacitors to strengthen your shields, or something like Quantum Destabilizer to reduce your enemy's rate of fire significantly.
