WTF?
The point of a transport is getting the soldiers safely from point A to point B. Thus transports absolutely SHOULD have guns on them.
The other ships are specialized weapons platforms. The transport is specialized in troop transport which means it is engineered in such a way as to be best designed to get troops safely to their destination. If that means putting a gun on the transport ship then they'd put a gun on the transport ship. Transport ships used to have guns in Stellaris, same with mining stations, research stations, etc. Removing the guns from those was an absolutely bone headed move.
Which is why using transports as a weapon platform is stupid: other ships already filling that role.
It would be nice not to worry if a corvette slips past your forces only to have it completely grind all real offensive capability (conquest wise) to a near total halt.
I believe the various militaries of our real world arm their APC's and I expect they all know far more about why it's a good idea rather than the pidly reasoning we can come up with as to why it is not.
Nuff said.
Ya unless you had 20 transport ships and didn't have to worry about that one corvette ending your war for ya.
And yes, almost all APC's have guns on them.
Because who doest like additional heavy weapons support when your guys offload?
