I don't think you can do it in Vanilla. There might be a mod for it.

transport ships is not for space warfare they are for dropping drops. if you could give them weapons there would be no need to have the other ship types. but no you can't put weapons on transports that is the whole point of the transport.

yep, theres a mod for it, because filling a ship with an entire regiment of soldiers and leaving it without a single weapon to defend itself felt kinda silly.

they transport things ... its like you put a tank cannon on a bus

WTF?

The point of a transport is getting the soldiers safely from point A to point B. Thus transports absolutely SHOULD have guns on them.

The other ships are specialized weapons platforms. The transport is specialized in troop transport which means it is engineered in such a way as to be best designed to get troops safely to their destination. If that means putting a gun on the transport ship then they'd put a gun on the transport ship. Transport ships used to have guns in Stellaris, same with mining stations, research stations, etc. Removing the guns from those was an absolutely bone headed move.

Although there were perks to having a mining station take out a fleet of transports, I prefer being able to send corvettes to terrorize the supply lines of the enemy. If you want your transports to be safe, you send an escort.

And that exactly what it does: moves troops from point A to point B.

Which is why using transports as a weapon platform is stupid: other ships already filling that role.

I dont know, I think Having light armaments makes sense. plenty of military transports have some manner of defending themselves. If the mod allowed you to have say one weapon slot then it would provide some base protection. It wouldn’t replace a battleship or even a corvette but it would leave them able to at least defend themselves.

I agree with arming transports ships. The great thing about it is two things. They can help planetary bombardment. Two corvettes don't wipe out 50 squads of gene warriors.

It would be nice not to worry if a corvette slips past your forces only to have it completely grind all real offensive capability (conquest wise) to a near total halt.

I believe the various militaries of our real world arm their APC's and I expect they all know far more about why it's a good idea rather than the pidly reasoning we can come up with as to why it is not.

Nuff said.

Ya unless you had 20 transport ships and didn't have to worry about that one corvette ending your war for ya.

They transport military things. Therefore an APC would be a better comparison than a bus.

And yes, almost all APC's have guns on them.
