Can I reverse engineer ships?
I received two small fleets as a reward for some research projects, these ships are quite advanced compared to the rest of my fleet and I wanted to know if I could somehow get the techs off of them and incorporate it into my fleet. Its still very early in the game and my ships have no shields and only basic fusion power, meanwhile these new ships have shields, Antimatter reactors and X-ray lasers. I would love to kit out my entire fleet like that but I cant see any obvious buttons or options to break the ships down.

I think you can't, the best you can do is suicide your ship inside your territory or get killed in battle, and have your science ship analyze it, and even if you do that you only get small percentage of the research, you still have to further research it by yourself AFAIK. But dont count on me on that though, someone else might know it better

You can in a sense reverse engineer some techs, like Amoeba weapons, scourge tech that kind of thing. After analyzing the debris they will appear in your Research menu with some points towards recearching it. Other then that, no, you have to wait for it to pop up in your menu which is random.

I have not seen any way to do that. All you can hope is to kill some units that belong to a another empire.your at war with, and then research it.

That is a shame, I was excited when I looked at the Gear these things had. But if I cant reverse it then it wont really effect things in the long run, its just 6 ships, wont really make an impact.

One of the things I loved about Master of Orion 2 was that you could pull apart captured ships and learn their secrets.

PS. MOO 2 was over 20 years ago...get with the times Paradox! :)

to be fair this is the first time Paradox doing 4x space game though, or probably they do it intentionally and release it patches later

Agreed. I still play it a few times a year. I bought Stellaris on the Summer Sale and before I even loaded it, I did another binge weekend of MOO2. Outdated graphics and limited AI, though it might have had, it still somehow has charm.

Amen for that. Over the years there's been a a few potential successors but they all have succumbed to excessive micro, ridiculous ship combat, lack of decent ship customization or poor overall mechanics.

Still waiting for that HD remake of MoO2. Would get that in a heartbeat.

Star drive 2 is a pretty close HD remake. It does have its issues though, lots of bugs and the dev has abandoned it.
