Can't figure out how to progress in game, stagnating gameplay
Pretty much what the title says, I can't seem to figure out how to progress in the game aside from researching and researching some more. I'm not getting any more anomalies, no void clouds or pirates or anything of the like, and I can't go to war because I'm either on really good terms with my larger neighbors or too weak to go to war with my rivals. I've pretty much surveyed the entirety of my galaxy and discovered pretty much every civilization. I have colonized 5 planets fully and I'm still researching upgrades to the buildings. I can't attack leviathans either because I'm not strong enough. I only have 135 max ships, and my fleet power hasn't broke 10k yet. I'm at a loss for what to do, and this is my first run through of the game as well.

Any ideas or suggestions would be awesome, because this game is really fun but I really don't want to have to restart.

Don't focus purely on planet development, most of your focus should be on building space fleet.
you need to use sectors and constantly grow

If you stick to having 5 planets in this game then of course you will stagnate. You need to spread out more and conquer.

aquire species to fit all 3 habitats or modify your own species. There's only military conquest victories here.

Since this is your first time, it would be prudent of me to make you aware of the ship builder feature (F10). Make sure you deck out your ships with the latest technology (And a variety of weapons is a good all-around start; don't focus on only one weapon type unless you want to counter a very specific enemy). Make sure your main army always has an admiral with positive traits.

Once you're done with the ship builder, do not forget to upgrade your current fleet as well!

And don't forget to repair after every battle (Unless it's an emergency and you need to take out something quickly) with the button the left of the one shown in the picture.

Don't forget that you can actually surpass your fleet number (It can be 140/135 or even 280/135) and your core sector number as well (like 7/5 or 8/7); but do keep in mind that the further you go over the limit, the steeper the maintenance will be. (being over 1 or 4 fleet numbers over your limit is fine if you really want to build that big ship to go with your fleet). However, try to never be over the core sector limit unless you're planning to put the planets over the cap in a sector very soon (Preferably within 2 months)

You can increase your maximum fleet size by:
  • Adding spaceports to colonized planets that don't have them
  • Upgrading existing spaceports
  • Research
  • Population
  • Your emperor/president/whathaveyou may have a trait
  • Edicts (Needs to be discovered/developed)

You can increase your core sector only with research. It is generally recommended to use sectors instead of focusing on increasing core sector.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Only been playing for a week myself but did a ton of research and youtube video's.

Kinda hard to do that when I'm on good terms with my neighbors and have no worlds to colonize around me because I got what seems like a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ start.

I CAN'T grow, for me to be able to grow I have to go to war with my neighbors, all of which are way more powerful than me.

Thank you for actually explaining how to do things unlike the others. I did know about the the ship designer and upgrading the current fleet. I didn't however know about going over the max limit, thats something to look into. Problem is that I can't expand to new worlds because there are no colonizable worlds around me anymore, the only way to do so is to go to war with my neighbors of whom would wipe the floor with me. At the current moment I can't do anything other than constantly research because I am unable to expand my borders any further, that's my main problem right there......

Im gonna be honest, there is no 'progression'..
the only progression, is when you hit a certain mark (such as getting over 40K fleet power, or finishing the 'jump warpwtfever' research) and everything goes to total hell and you lose.
Thats, progress..... atleast to paradox it is.

So, either research more Terraforming tech so that you can terraform and colonize red planets, max out your fleet (meaning the most you can afford, not your limit) and see if that makes you strong enough, or restart. If you're stuck, there is no shame in restarting and seeing if you get a better galaxy set up and/or start.

@SgtAwesome97

Please give us more info. What current date, what was map size & settings. Screenshots.

Again will strongly advice early game guide (link in my first post here). It's really work and will give your enough base to start some wars after start.

What's your weapon choices? What's your fleet builds? Because you know - you can won even against massively more powerfull fleets (just recently done test and my 48k stack won over Fallen Empire 64k with half of power remains).

When I say I can't expand my borders, I mean it's literally impossible without war. There are no colonizable worlds, not even red planets. I really don't want to have to restart, but it's seeming like the only option to me.

The date is 2407-08-07, can't remember map size but its an eliptical. I chose no advanced ai starts and 2 or 3 fallen empires, no clustered starts, and less than recommended empires because i was trying to avoid the problem on being boxed in, but it happened anyway. Weapon wise i started with mass drivers, and now i have mostly lasers and disruptors in my fleet. 160 ships and its at 11k, still not enough for war.

FIVE planets at 2407?! It's extremly bad start you're have.

Please - look guide that I'm advertising to you. You should have 5 planet something near 2230-2240. Then continue to expand - peacefully if can or via wars.

Lasers are not good, switch to plasma ASAP. Disruptors are worst anti-shield - switch to neutron torpedoes on corvettes, kinetic artillery on large ships or in worst case - on railguns.

Kinda figured I had gotten a bad setup with this run, just there were so few habitable worlds around me to begin with, I had to move my capital once, but by then my neighbors had grown 3 to 4 times my size, and i was stuck.....
SgtAwesome97 Jan 12, 2017 @ 9:09am
Just went ahead and restarted, I chose 10 AI enpires in eliptical galaxy, no advanced neighbors, and i think 600 stars. i put fallen at 2. hopefully this will work better, already have a habitable world right next to me, and decent sized too.
corisai Jan 12, 2017 @ 9:20am
You're guaranted to have 2 habitable worlds with random (but not very large) size near you ;)

Good luck in your new game.
