Game start - Horde of enemies - Answer: Mining Drones
I just began my first game, am now two years and four months in. I'm still exploring because colony ships take 90 something months to research. I am a wormhole FTL civ, and within my first wormhole bubble from my home planet I found some neightbors. I immediately paused the game as it said hostile aliens. jump over to my 3 corvette fleet, and find a starbase with 2k strength, a second starbase, and 3 fleets 750 strength each. Needless to say when I unpaused the fleet was destroyed in less than two seconds.

EDIT:

The faction seems to be mining drones, which will not chase you or attack your colonies/civ.

They won't invade you, they will just stay in their systems and attack anyone that enters them.

Some empires will have advanced start. You can control that in the settings when you start the game.

But you may have encountered pirates or some space monsters by the sound of it, since you didn't mention declaring a war. You may have to wait and develop more to take on them.

Is this a normal alien civ? Or some of the game ending fallen civs i've seen mention of?

I don't believe monsters/space creatures build starbases? but maybe it's pirates?

Monsters (crystaline entities, rogue mining drones, pirates, etc.) do often have star bases.

So there are three types of empires you will encounter (not counting primitives, that are not empires)
- Regular empires just like you
- Advanced start empires (configurable when game starts)
- Fallen empire

The ones killed you are definitely not fallen empire, they're way more powerful than that and typically have their borders closed, so you wont even get to them without war declaration.

It wasn't a regular or advanced start empire either, since they wouldn't just be hostile to you without a war declaration.

What killed you is a monster faction. They will not follow you out of their system and will not get stronger as the time goes by. Eventually you'll wipe them out easily.

Thank you. I'll continue on then.
I thought perhaps i'd really delayed my advancement somehow.

Sound like it was the mining drones specifically.

Multiple stations in one system, and multiple low power fleets, sounds like mining drones.

They did look like they could be drones, which is why i discounted the monster idea. I didn't know that there was a such thing as rogue mining drones in the first place.

It's most likely mining drones in that case, and they aren't rogue per-se. Their makers are just long dead and they haven't exactly got the message so to speak.

Wow, I have found them in 4 of the handful of systems i've explored so far. seems a hair ridiculous how many there are and how widespread.

They used to be randomly distribute across the map, however (1.3/1.4?) changed them, so they appear concentrated in one area. You've had your start right next to their "territory", which is centred around a drone boss system, with outlying systems filled with lesser fleets. Head away from there and you won't find them. But you may find amoebas, crystals, void clouds or pirates.

Yep, every system in that direction has them in it. my home world spawned in the edge of Drone space.

First game of stellaris.... My luck... also it's a ring galaxy so that entire direction is blocked off.

You're always going to have natural pressures. If not drones, it will be pirates or some other monsters, or you'll spawn next to an advanced start empire. Sometimes you spawn in the middle of a cluster of regular empires and you will have claw your way out by making alliances and ganging up on others.
It is not a matter of luck, it is how game is meant to be, otherwise it would be Sims in space.

If you don't spawn in mining drone space, you spawn in the territory of some other monster, like crystals or pirates. I'd say the ancient mining drones is actually the best faction to spawn near since they are slightly weaker than some of the other monster factions, and if you destroy their processing hub, you get some good rewards.

I recommend you rebuild some (5?) corvettes, then focus on colonies until you have 2 or 3, then build up to 20 corvettes.
