co-op play?
so me and a friend of mine are considering buying the humble monthly with stellaris, but since we only play co-op games together, i would just like to hear if it's possible to play this together as a team (like in civ 5) from start to finish vs the ai. and how does the turns work in multiplayer? do you share the same turn or how does it work exactly?

so it has like locked teams, or do you need to form alliances in-game? does it have shared win?
how does combat work? is it like in rebellion?
i guess i should just ask how much this game is like rebellion : P

Locked teams no
form alliances in game yes
you can also make sure you start next to your buddy
shared win yes
combat is largely up to cpu. your main role is outfitting the ships with weapons armor etc and telling them where to go etc. ypu can attack and retreat etc but once combat has actully been joined and the shooting starts you cant micro at all.

by rebellion do you mean sins of a solar empire : rebellion?
in that case its very similar, stellaris is less combat focused tho. it would be like taking sins and blending it with civilization sorta. You have ALOT mor econtrol over your planets and stuff, but a lil less control of your fleet.

I have over 1000 hours into both and I like stellaris WAAAAY more.

1. You do not start out on a team, but you can form one as you play by building an alliance and then a federation with each other

2. Time is the same for all, so you both and the AI are all doing things at the same time.

3. You can have shared win if you are in a federation together

4. Combat is fairly straight forward, with a Rock-Paper-Scissors like style. Shields are good against one weapon, bad against another. Armor is good against a different weapon, weak to another. Having superior numbers and fleet power makes it more likely for you to win, like with anything.

5. Combat strategies are more iffy, but still do-able. You cannot control them once battle has started

It's not neccesarilly rock paper scissors. There are counters for some weapon types, but others are middle-ground. One thing to note is that the downsides to each type can be overcome by mixing weapons! Plasma throwers and kinetic artillery is very strong, for example.

Missiles have it the worst (Countered by Flak and point defense) with the exception to the energy torpedos. The AI seems to really favor point defense too, which is a shame.

thanks a lot for your input :)

yes, i meant sins :)

how do you make sure you start near your buddy? is that an option?
is it difficult to make a federation / alliance?
how do you share the map between allies? i'm guessing they can't overlap? you mentioned it was more like civ than sins are, so if you have 2 planets too close then they can't use the resource the other planet has (like how towns and farming tiles work in civ, where 2 differernt cities can't work on the same tile/farm)?

Yes "clustered players" is an option. if its just you and a friend you will start next to each other. if you're playing with lots of people I dont think you can guarantee you will be close. but 2 players yes guarantee (up to maybe 3-5 then it starts a new 'cluster'

No, you just have to all be willing. So as long as you both agree. it can be more difficult with AI if they have different views than you

Yeah cant overlap, so you just kinda divvy it up as you see fit

There are "tiles" on the planets surface, not affected by nearby planets.

Most resources are global. err uh galactic, so the combind production of all your planets kinda goes into a 'pool' you can draw from.

If you've played both those games just imagine managing planets similar to how civ manages cities, and imagine combat/fleets soooorta like sins. You have alot more control over how the ships are built (fully customizable) but you cant micro mid-battle like sins

If you like both those games I imagine stellaris right up your alley, personally i like it more than either ive been comapring it to

And theres no turns its real time like sins. you (the host) can adjust the speed though at will (theres liek 5 or 6 speed settings) and anyone can pause. I would say the "tempo" is alot faster than civ but much slower than sins
Terijian May 12, 2017 @ 1:51pm
for real though if you are a fan of sins and civ just buy it you'll love it lol

"There are "tiles" on the planets surface, not affected by nearby planets."

So two different planets owned by two different players won't have any negative effects on each other then? In Civ 5 it was really annoying to lie too close to each other, as one city would take the other city's farms, mines, fishing spots, etc.

Nope, no negative effects. You can even own a planet around the same star as another emoires planets (I think those situatuon are usually from war or enlightenment since you cant colonize in someone elses borders) with no negative effects.
All of the tiles are contained on the planet
