Should I move into this area?
This is my first time finding these fallen empire things (at least, that's what I think they are). I think I've lucked out as they seem friendly (one of them has been extremely nice and just gives me free stuff, the other doesn't seem to care about my presence too much).

I want to expand into the territory in between here:

But I am afraid to provoke them with border tension or whatever it's called. This is the less friendly of the two fallen empires. Should I just go ahead and take it? Will it make them mad enough to attack me?

It does appear they like you, but don't go too close. Border friction with them is very bad. Do not do anything that could make them mad. If they attack, game over. You're lucky its not a xenophobe, or else you'd probably be dead already.

Do NOT colonize any Gaia planets though. That will definitely piss them off. In general I'd say the best thing to do it keep your distance until you have equivalent fleet power.

Colonize that planet on the border. You will be fine.

xenophile and materialist are fine with you being near them, spiritualist is fine as long as you DONT COLONIZE HOLY WORLDS (gaia planets with a special modidifer on them, and special names)
stay away from the xenophobe, far away

Is border friction reduced if we're both xenophiles? Also, the +45 or whatever that is shown is temporary from a deal, the resting point is +10 from xenophilia. And how is border friction calculated? Is it a certain amount per system you control that neighbors one of their systems?

Also, what is it about these Gaia worlds everyone is talking about? I haven't come across one yet, but I assume they are 100% habitable planets? And why does it make the fallen empires mad? Does it make them mad no matter where the Gaia world is?

Filthy xenos will learn to love you colonizing there. They are lucky you allow them to have the land they have.

If there is a Spiritualist Fallen Empire in the game, there will also be 4 Holy worlds in the game.

Holy Worlds are Gaia planets with 100% habitability, but they have a special icon in the upper left of their planet screen (the usual place where you see positives or negatives for a planet)

They also have special names:Pristine Jewel, Walled garden, Prophet's Retreat, and emerald mausoleum (I THINK those are the 4 names, i'm hazy on it still)

colonizing those will instantly make them angry at you, so best avoid any Gaia world with the Holy World modifer

gaia worlds have 100% habitability for everyone. they are extremely rare (or can be made thourgh teraforming)
the spiritualist fallen empire has 5 around his territory that it considers "holy" and will be very mad if you colonize them. they all have special names and a modifier on the planet so they are pretty easy to avoid.
its only the spiritualist who will be angry and only for those 5 or so gaia worlds, if you find one just around the place then your fine.

as for border friction im not entirely sure on the calculation but its something with your borders being close to their borders (maybe its planets?). but some empires get a bigger opinion hit (isolationists) while others get a much lower hit (federation builders)

Well I only set a max of 2 fallen empires in this game I think, so these two should be it.

The one closest to me is Fanatic Materialist, will that have any effect on it?

I built a frontier outpost in the system that has the yellow planet, and my borders are now touching theirs. But there's no border friction penalty! I hope it stays that way.

FEs don't suffer border friction, with the exception of fanatic xenophobes and they do that in a special way. Your at no threat.
