Crash to Desktop
A few decades into any save I start, I start getting random crashes to desktop: the music stops, the screen freezes, and a second later the game window closes itself, without even giving an error message.
Here's how I've tried to fix it:
  • Switching to windowed or full screen mode.
  • Running all the redistributables in the Stellaris folder.
  • Updating the video drivers.
  • Disabling the antivirus.
  • Completely uninstalling and reinstalling the game.
  • Starting a whole new savefile.
  • Deleting the Stellaris folder in My Documents.
  • Disabling auto-save and save-to-cloud.
  • Running steam and the Stellaris executable as an administrator.

But nothing has helped. Has anyone experienced any similar problems? Does anyone have any ideas as to what I could do to fix the issue?

I am also having the exact same issue. Few decades in and random crashing begins. It's actually becomming unplayable at this point.

I just figure the newest build + DLC introduced some new bugs and such. Hopefully It'll get worked out soon

Hmm, I got CTD 5-10 seconds after loading a save. For me it seems that the crash happened at a fixed date, or when my fleet is in the same system with a certain event-related enemy fleet (from Leviathan DLC)
My game never crashed before, so. . .either it's caused by Leviathan DLC or The game's update.

I actually un-installed and re-downloaded the game and was able to play for several hours last night, crash free.

Maybe give that a try if you already havent.

I have already! I reinstalled the game and started a new save at the same time, so I can't really tell which one had the effect of giving me a few more hours.
With that said, I have some more details about how it's been happening. It seems to only ever crash at the beginning of a month. I've been autosaving every month, and if I reload the save as it crashed, it crashes again, but if I reload the save from the previous month, I'm fine for a bit. I'm guessing that there's some in-game event at the start of every month, that can make the game crash somehow.

Interesting. I'm surprised a fresh install didn't sort the issue out. Makes me think it's definitely a bug then.

I seemed to get a crash when opening the contacts menu or the Traditions panel. Seemed like clicking the menus down from the top of the screen triggered some sort of lockup and straight to desktop.

I have been 100% stable since I re-installed though. played all day with no issues. Honestly i do not envy you, having to save every single month :/ Hopefully this gets sorted soon

Downloading and reinstalling seem to fix it .... for now. However, the game still crashes whenever I click the declare war button

Maybe beause of mods that adds new empire, or more war name variety. That is if you have mods installed.

I've bee having a more-or-less identical issue. No mods, so that's probably not the problem. I was going to try turning off some of the DLC next, to see if that did anything at all.

I have no mods yet I still seem to crash whenever I hit the (X) button to close the launcher or start up the game. It is also a brand new fresh install.

I'm having the same exact problem. During late game, I'll get autocrashes at the start of a month. I'm using a Mac rather than PC though. If I uninstall and reinstall the game, I can start new games just fine, and it will work without problems until about year 2370-ish in gameplay. Then, I will have a sudden crash at the start of a game month. I can back up to a previous month and play, but when I hit that date, insta-crash to desktop. If I save just before the start of the new month, insta-crash once the game is loaded and starts to run.
