Screwed up display size--how can I restore defaults?
I've been playing Stellaris on my laptop, but using a bigger external monitor. While adjusting between monitors, I set the display size to 2880x1800, Windowed, but now it's so big, I cannot see most of the screen. I can use the "S" shortcut to get to settings at the opening screen, but then I cannot get enough of the settings screen visible to read the "apply" button after trying to adjust it to a smaller size.

I know there is a "cancel" "apply" and "rest" option at the bottom of the window off-screen, but there doesn't seem to be a keyboard shutout to activate them? What can I do to reset the graphics settings if I can't reach those buttons? (I can't seem to switch between full-screen and windows either! Grrr!)

FWIW, I'm using a 2013 Macbook Pro and a Dell U2414H. Switching back to Single Monitor view doesn't help, nor does restarting the game or restarting Steam.

When I was using my Mac I had this problem with Masters of Orion. I think what I did was I exited Retina mode, went into a different screen resolution. I can't remember if I went smaller or larger and was able to make my changes in game and then go back to Retina mode.

Not sure if this will help you or not. Only idea I can think of. Good luck. Hope it works.

Hmm. I'll give it a try. I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game from my Steam Library, but apparently the reinstalled version is making use of stored setting preferences, because it started up with the unusably oversized screen menu again.

If you are going to uninstall the game, you need to make sure you delete ALL folders. There could be another folder that you didn't delete. Like in Windows you have your INSTALL in like C:\programe files\Steam\etc but there is also another file usually under C:\My Doucments\Games\Stellaris or something like that. That could be the folder that has your settings or what not. I could be wrong though.

Sorry I don't know how that was for Mac. I had the same problem because Mac or Mac software is different and not so user friendly.

Yeah, I suspect there's a Mac equivalent for the folder you mention, I'm just unable to locate it so far. I'm hunting for it as we speak, but without luck. I may try deleting the Steam application and reloading it as well.

if you can find and delete the settings.txt file wherever its located on mac then that should reset your settings. the game will recreate it with default settings. no need to keep reinstalling

you can also just open the file and edit the resolution settings directly from that file

D'oh. ShadoWwolF, thank you (and everyone else). Once I figured out the location of the settings.txt file, I could simply go into it and manually edit the size= x by y line to something sane, and that solved the problem instantly. Problem solved. Thanks, everyone!:steamhappy:

What is the locations of the settings.txt? This way I know for next time. I can't find it now lol. So glad I was able to help a bit.

I think it's under This PC/User>Documents>Paradox Interactive>Stellaris and then it's the text document called pdx_settings. I believe that is the correct file to change the games resolution.

You can also open up the launcher and go to the settings tab.

I had this same problem on my 2020 Macbook after setting display to 3840x2160. When I launched the game it showed the screen half off the bottom, so I couldn't see or press "accept" in the settings window.

I fixed it by editing the resolution in both Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/settings.txt and Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/pdx_settings.txt

I think pdx_settings.txt are the launcher settings and settings.txt is for the actual game.
