Me ususally go for something around 1 BS, 2 cruisers, 2-3 destroyers, no corvettes.
Sometimes, full BS too.
Going Battleship/Destroyer, or Cruiser/Corvette. Never mixing all four though. As the first responder said though....as many different answers as there are people.
Why? Because performance depends on the total # of ships. At endgame, if you do that ratio, you're going to be looking at something like 450 ships in a battle (240-120-60-30) vs. 160 (40-40-40-40) using equivalent naval capcity values of 660 for a late-game fleet (just as a simple example). That's 3x the # of ships in the battle, and even my high-end gaming laptop with 24 GB of RAM and 8 GB of vid RAM slowed to a crawl. Battles were much more pleasant to watch on 40-40-40-40. So I keep a unit ratio now, at least once I am able to (obviously not in early game).
See I usually have two or three classes of ship for each ship (excluding BB).
My usual build is Battleship, 3 Cruiser variants (Gun cruiser, broadside cruiser <many smaller guns>, torpedo cruiser), 3 Destroyer variants (Gun DD, broadside DD, and anti-aircraft/missile DD), and 2 Corvette variants (Broadside, Torpedo).
My breakdown would be for example in this ratio;
10 BB
5 of each cruiser variant
5 of each destroyer variant
10 of each corvette variant.
I usually find that even in fairly close fleet powers I am replacing anywhere from 1-5 corvettes, the odd cruiser and almost never a destroyer and once every 5 or 6 wars a BB.
I also use several disposable fleets of 10 destroyers with large gun slots and afterburners to wreck havoc on the resource stations.
Takes me like 15 minutes to set up all the orders but when I hit play things progress very rapidly.
Even against enemies with equivalent tech and fleet strength.
