Change Governing Ethics?
I started a game as a Pacifist, as I was thinking it would be great to have a boost in Unity as I started out the game. It worked really well at first, but it's now causing a major issue. Three times now I've had random species appear within my empire space. They pop up and their sphere of incluence takes away all my mining / research from at least 4 or 5 other systems around them. The worst is one of my rivals declares them "under protection" and I can't do anything without starting a war against a large rival species.

As a Pacifist, I am not able to declare war on the minor species and demand that they cede their planet to me (thus eliminating that species control over the area). The first time it happened it was annoying, but after the 2nd or 3rd it has begun to really hurt my empire's income.

I know you can change your Civics and your species traits, but is there really no way to change the Governing Ethics section? I thought I read at one point that there was, but I can't find it now.

Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

You can change your ethic, but you need at least 20% of the pops from this ethic.

Unfortunatly, militarist pops raise by being at war, while pacifist pops raise when being at peace.

So, it is way easier for a militarist to switch to pacifist (just stay at peace) than it is for a pacifist to go militarist (have to go to war)

For your problem, you can also try to raise border ranges, there are civics, techs, and perks for that.

Yeah, so this sucks... My game has come to a complete standstill because I can't advance in any direction. I tried making them allies, but their possible relation cap never went high enough. Now I went in the opposite direction to make them hate me, but still no change in war status. Both of the main directions are blocked by NPC's that I cannot convince to declare war on me. I insult them both repeatedly, but even at -400 relation nothing happens.

How can you possibly win with a Pacifist Empire?

Just started a game as fanatical pacifists. I got a millitarist faction that popped up around the time I maxed my first tradition tree. I've never been at war, but apparently you can also get millitarist pops if you have very poor relations with a neighboring empire (I'm neighboring Metalheads and Fantatical Purifiers... Lucky me...).

Integrating strong or very strong pops also increases millitarism I think.

Personally I find pacifism one of the better ethos. But it's weakness can be a pain to work around sometimes. Unless they believe they have a major advantage, all but the metalhead, fallen empires, and maybe a hive mind who is very boxed in will rarely declare war. Metalheads have a habit of killing off most of their millitary doing something very stupid though, so they might not declare war right after doing that.

Right. I did finally figure out the faction system, and started to move myself away from the Pacifism. However, to do so requires a lot of influence. The only one that I could get was moving myself towards Fanatical Spiritualism (none of the others had enough support). However, I'm hoping the next one will be moving ot Militarism. Downside = I have to wait another 20 years. Ugh.

As i tend to play militarist empires, from memory, they like

Being at war, agressive first contact, strong and very strong pops, no weak pop in the empire, strong neighbours as rival, not being in a federation, full military service.
