Really confused about if I should be demanding vassals or tribute
I am trying to conquer the galaxy and neither seem very good. What is the 'standard' way to go if going for conquest?

Also, do I eventually expand to take over the whole galaxy or no? So far I just demand a planet and move on but this takes forever.

anyone?

i beleive the difference is that tributary pay you 25% of their energy and minerals and still or mostly independent meaning they can still colonize and i beleve they dont help out durring wars where as vassals go to war with you are not indepent they can be intergrated in to your empire where as tributarys can not

To add to what Xeirra already stated, your vassal's planets do count towards the conquest victory condidtion.

So do tributaries NOT count? Dont you need 100% of the universe - meaning Id have to beat them down?

One of the victory conditions is 'there must be no other independent empires in the game'.

Tributaries are considered indepdent I believe, they are more paying protection money to you.

What I really hate is when I go to war the races I just beat down are on my 'side' but of course are weak and just lose me points

This doesn't normally bother me since space battles with tiny fleets are minimal warscore, but if you want to minimize it you could try setting your fleet to 'take point' (an icon with three triangles iirc) so that they attempt to mass on your own fleet. They may not really contribute much to it but at least you can guide them into battles that aren't hopeless.

vassals are better than having tributaries or trying to conquer one planet at a time because they can be integrated into you country for some cost in influence and will cost far less to demand than the sum of all of their planets added together. It is far easier and faster than trying to conquer individual planets. Although tributaries are technically still independent they are still better than conquering planets because it is possible to later turn them into vassals if you on good enough terms with them. At least thats in my experience, I usually dont bother with tributaries regardless.

Vassalising allows you to take a bigger chunk of the galaxy at once. After a little while you can just integrate them. Tributaries are IMO only usefull when you know you have so much infrastructure to build that you're not really ready to be bogged down by another big chunk of planets in need of investments. I'm not sure if it's worth taking tributaries though, I mainly go for vassalization.

Vassals are usually way better as they are like your dog.
They have no more diplomacy, cant colonize, go to war with you etc
Plus, you can integrate them.
Also, their territory and planets can act as a buffer, their fleets help to detect or fight enemies...

Tributaries are totally independant, they just pay you.
It cripples them hard as giving 25% of income makes keeping a positive balance way harder for them, but that is it.

Can I vassalize them, then kill them off so I get my own humans on the planet?
