Plantoid paradox.
I was thinking, if you eat a member of the plantoids species, are you a canibal or a vegetarian?

well if your an plantoid and eat another plantoid i would say your an true vegan

Since cannibalism is defined as "The eating of the flesh of an animal by another animal of the same kind" (Merriam-Webster) eating a plantoid would not constitute cannibalism.
A plantoid eating another plantoid of the same kind could arguably be called cannibalism but still falls outside the definition presented by Merriam-Webster (since plantoids are not animals).
Though since they ARE plants I suppose they could technically be considered part of a vegetarian diet.

So i can process plantoids for food and tell my mom that i ate my vegetables?

We have both on this world.

A plant can be carnivorous as well.

Do you think the Merriam-Webster dictionary would be the be all end all in a multi-tiered pan galactic community as far as definitions went?

It gets worse, a friend of my gave a 3rd definition...carnivorism....oh god...

Of course not, but since we don't have a dictionary created within the context of a multi-tiered pan galactic community I had to settle for the next best thing.

And i have to establish that the setting itself extends beyond that.

Especially considering how Merriam Webster isn't a proper dictionary. They just include popular phrases and meaning, not correct ones. You'll want some Oxford.

I think you mean carnivore, cannibal would be if you ate your own species.

But no, it is not really meat so I think would still be vegan. Not sure how those hippies would feel about it tho.

That's not a paradox, since those two are not mutually exclusive. If you extend the definition of cannibalism to mean any species (not just animals) eating its own kind, then a plantoid that ate its own species could be both a canibal and a vegetarian.

However, Stellaris does not allow cannibalism for plantoids or anyone else. A plantoid could eat another (different) plantoid, or a mammal could eat another (different) mammal, but no one is allowed to process their own species for food, or allowed to set their own species to be livestock.

So, the best you could do would be a vegetarian plantoid, which isn't any more taboo than a carnivorous mammal.

but what if plantoids eat fruits? :steambored:

My guess is that our definition of canibalism would extend to any sentient life we encountered.

Vegans, I need an answer here

What if Plantoids have feelings... know pain, what do you eat now?
