plasma cannon is better but costs more power

Easy, plasma. It has higher armor penetration, which will lead to probably more damage.

Obviously Plasma. It does better damage and penetration. And costs the same amount of energy to equip.
Only draw back is the lower tracking and accuracy. Making it somewhat less effective vs corvettes.

Thx for the answer. Thought plasma was bit better, but was not sure and it started to make me wonder when autobest always put Gamma on them and started to be annoying to delete or chance that design. Thx for info all.

Plasma is far better, and I also love to be rid of the silly looking lightshows when I ditch lasers in favor of them.

Plasma is your best early game weapon for going to war as it is the best to destroy starports, in large mounts.

It´s not that laser is bad, you aren´t doing anything wrong if you want to go to war and simply didn´t roll plasma, and had to go for x-ray lasers instead. And both suck against shields so eventually you will need disruptor as secondary weapon.

Or Energy Torpedos.

Yes but those take time and need engineering then physics. So for mid game, disruptors + plasma. Doesn´t need to be many disruptors, 1 per each 4 plasma is a good ratio. Plasma should always go to large slots to do their station busting duty.
