Maybe for players, that would prefer to play humanoids and don't want to search under mammals for them. Also there are some achievements linked to stuff like that. Like infiltrating a certain reptile world as human.

Also, as humans we only class humans as mammals based on the scientific fact that we are mammallian in relation to the observable species on Earth. If we were to meet and alien from another world that shared certain human charactiristics we would class that creature as humanoid, because mammals may not even exist on their homeworld.

a humanoid is something with 2 legs, 2 arms and a head. they could be reptiles and still humanoid, they could plants and still be humanoid, they could be fish and still be humanoid, because humanoid is a body shape. Humanoid is how they look like, not what they are.

By that definition 99% of all science fiction alien species would be humanoid. That's just silly. These categories are used to further separate everyone from each other...

Also - This is a game. In a made up universe - shooting lasers and using wormholes to travel.

too bad because that's the case, and it would be more like 80%

i guess that is true, but it still feel weird to have a humanoid tab with just 5 thing in it...

Sounds an awful lot like an opinion to me - Also there is a plethora of mods out there for more species.

Maybe they'll add more humanoid portraits in the future and not another Arthropoid...

you were correct, like @terrkas said. it is called humanoid for players.

just because they swapped swap out the head, doesnt mean all the other humanoid aliens with beaver/snake/etc heads are not humanoid..

a word's definition is a result of its origin, just because people use the word incorrectly doesnt mean it is now the correct definition..

just an example of how extreme a humanoid can actually be.. @mansen and no this an opinion.. do some research. an insect isnt humanoid, but if u slap an insect head on a humanoid body.. the resultant creature is humanoid.. in relation to its arthropod insect buddy.. ..

when the game was released, there was no sub-category for humanoids and humans were simply one of the mammal species. i think the devs added that category (and some more humanoid profiles) specifically because players asked for "rubber forehead" aliens - since they are such a prominent feature of many space opera universes (star trek etc.).

also, they do have a (very minor) gameplay effect. i think compliments and insults for humanoids are different from mammals. ie. when someone likes you, they address you as "angel" and when they hate you they call you "monkey". the standard mammals are addressed as "sphinx" / "beast" instead.
