make level 1 antenna, when you get 249 crowns buy either the AKM or the ES16A2 weapon plan, alternatively you can get good with M1911 and use that as its fairly capable but it is afterall a pistol but it only costs 149, alternatively you can use the luger for 79, don't waste on a PM though as that pistol is garbage.
buying the plans isn't all a waste either, because you will unlock the ammo for 9mm weapons with the luger (MP5, AUR Para, Berry, Gal) and the ES16A2 (L85A1, Bugle, M4A1, and AUR A1) ammo type
the AKM is pretty capable and cheap, the idea is if you are running low on weapons that you have a type to make cheaply that is still capable of trading up and gives you access to a variety of the russian weapons (SKS, Vz 52, A74-K)
1 deconstructed L96, L85 or remmy is equal to 6 or 7 Mosin's for example, meaning if I loot 1 yellow rarity gun and deconstruct I can fuel a weapon for 6 or 7 more encounters.
also you can do shoot outs or eliminations to earn weapons/consumables for use in encounters, they do not require you have a loadout as they give you the weapons to use during each life/round.
when you have a common rifle like the AKM/Mosin etc you can swap it out at the locked container or off somebodys corpse and take a more expensive gun back out.
its also one of the reasons that pistols are really useful, besides giving high mobility on a weapon switch it allows you to take out 2 rifles and another pistol out of a game without having to discard anything off the slots.
in order to make ammo for guns you must own a plan for one that uses that ammo type, so if you have a bunch of L85s or MP5s for example you don't need to buy the expensive weapon plan instead just buy the cheapest plan that utilizes that type of ammo.
no one really crafts expensive guns, they can take 12 hours or longer and do not ever cost less through the shelter upgrade, crafting time reduction and crafting price only gets reduced on consumables.
eventually people can create armor plates or portable signals on demand and thats where most of the materials get spent.
I usually roll with a Mosin (1550 materials and 15 seconds to craft) and a pistol, usually the VSS but if I don't have I would use M1911 or Luger. but you could always just enter with an ES16A2 or a tommy gun, both are similar to the mosin in terms of cost and crafting time.
I believe they are 2250 and 1 minute to craft, so you can always have one crafting while you enter a game. I just prefer Mosin and a pistol (a mosin + a luger for example would be 2050 materials per encounter) and that assumes that I just die and don't bring out any other guns.
the key to using the common guns is knowing what range and what situations they are good in, it can also dictate how I engage someone if I know what gun they are using. like if someone has a shotty I'd prefer not to enter close range, if they have an ES16A2 the engagement envelope is different than if they have a Thompson.
also keep in mind that some purples out perform the gold guns in different ways, the MP5 has horriawful range but is silenced has has terrific rate of fire but somewhat lack luster spread... where the AUR Para has decent rate of fire but overall better spread and doesn't suffer as bad at medium range and is not silenced.
I know this is a lot of information, but just wanted to give you more insight into the guns and strategies involved and also some insight as to how to spend your crowns if you have few to spare.
