Pretty much exactly this^^
The franchise overall is fantastic. This, along with a few other things (the Zelda series in particular), inspired me to become an artist. For reference, I watched the original series when i was about 16, and I'm 22 now. It really gave me a renewed appreciation for all things animated. Highly recommend giving both series a watch.
For adult oriented animation, I'd also recommend checking out:
Non-Anime:
-Samurai Jack
-Gargoyles
-Beast Wars
-Star Wars: Clone Wars miniseries (2003 series, not 2008 CG series, which is also decent)
-This one is excellent, only 2 hours long. Better than any Star Wars movie, imo.
Anime for Non-Anime fans:
-Almost anything from Studio Ghibli
-Grave of the Fireflies
-Wolf Children
-Berserk
-Cowboy Bebop
-Code Geass
-Death Note
I'm sure I've missed a lot but that's a good start :)
Lol. Funny, yet sad that so many subscribe to this line of thinking...
TL;DR - Watch it.
Definitely an excellent starting point. Trigun is equally as entertaining.
These two along with Samurai Champloo are some of my favorites. They all have such incredible music. And they've got great dubs. They all have kind of similar feel though: episodic stories with a subtle melancholy mood, lots of bitter-sweet moments and tragic characters. I wanted to come up with a really diverse list for non-anime watchers.
Yeah, I've read a bit of it. I still prefer the anime though. I've never been too big on comics/manga. Sound is really important to me. Part of me hopes they'll continue/reboot it someday.
But Avatar, actually has a story. Honestly, the Avatar series are more similar to Japanese anime than to Western cartoons. Which is why I personally like anime, they usually have a consistant plot that unfolds over time.
I'd bet that most of the Korra fans did watch The Legend of Aang when they were younger. And while I did watch it while I was younger, I didn't actually finish the story until I decided to watch it from the beginning when I was at college. And I loved it. Sure it had your typical kiddie cartoon parts here and there, but it did have an great deep emotional story, and really good character development. I can't believe something as good as Avatar was aired for kids who most wouldn't really appreciate the story at such a young age.
You truly get the best out of Avatar when you're older to comprehend everything in the story. If you're interested in starting Korra, I seriously recommend you watch The Legend of Aang first. I'm sure you'll be surprised by how good and interested the story is. And while I do prefer Korra to Aang, you get the most out of watching Korra by being a fan of the original series and just getting so many of their nods to the fans by referencing things from the original series.
And you really get to appreciate some of the cameos who make an appearance in Korra. If you watch Korra without watching Aang, you miss out on a lot of the emotion of the story.
The way I like to see Korra, is it's literally 100% for the fans. It just feels like that for me. Since the fans from the original are older, they've put on a more mature feel for Korra, if you compare Aang and Korra, Korra is definitely designed to entertain older audiences to an extent. There are some things in Korra that you wouldn't really expect in a children's cartoon, like murder and death, even a little blood here and there.
I'm going to be honest, I just knew Korra from top quality rule34 popping out like crazy with other girls in this show.
I haven't seen the show and got no plans to watch it. I did finished The Last Airbender though during the early morning cartoons years ago.
Avatar is so different from anything on Nick though, it really is a great show all around. Lots of emotions and stuff. You'd just have to give it a try with an open mind.
I definitely wouldn't relate it to My Little Pony, but I don't actually know much about that.
Avatar: The Last Airbender is from the kids being kids to them growing up.
Avatar: Legend of Korra is about 40-50 years past the last series as Aang has passed away via old age, and the rest have grown to elderly of age.
Korra is the NEW Avatar, when one Avatar dies another is born. So Korra is the new cause well they want some variety.

The whole comment about whether Korra is Bronie material..what isn't? There's groupies who fap off to everything now a days. You can look up Rule 34 for anything on the planet! You'd probably find people making porn outta characters made from vegtables and dip!
lol, dude...There is this christian show called "Veggie Tales"...If there is a rule34 for that...then why? WHY does humanity exsist??! :::looks off into sunset---->teardrop::::
