ADULTS: Why is Avatar such a good show?
I don't typically watch animation especially anime, but alot of people think this is bad ass. I am curious as to why and how it is bad ass and I might give it a try. Also is Legend of Kora the spin off to Avatar? Why did they pick Kora? I've seen a few episodes of Avatar in the past and I thought she was just a supporting character. I only ask this because I find it semi creepy that adults are very excited for an animated Nickolodeon sweaty preteen girl...or is Kora a legit chaaracter or am I dabbling in bronie territory here?

Well the first thing you need to get out of your head is that animated = for kids. Its just another medium to deliver a story.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is nearly a masterpiece, the characters and their motives are so well written and the final episodes and climax is one of the most epic conclusion to a series ever.

The Legend of Korra is a sequel set 70ish years I think after the events of Avatar TLA. The story arcs for each season are darker and more mature because the target audience is people who watched ATLA as a kid which would be in adulthood by now.

Pretty much exactly this^^

The franchise overall is fantastic. This, along with a few other things (the Zelda series in particular), inspired me to become an artist. For reference, I watched the original series when i was about 16, and I'm 22 now. It really gave me a renewed appreciation for all things animated. Highly recommend giving both series a watch.

For adult oriented animation, I'd also recommend checking out:

Non-Anime:
-Samurai Jack
-Gargoyles
-Beast Wars
-Star Wars: Clone Wars miniseries (2003 series, not 2008 CG series, which is also decent)
-This one is excellent, only 2 hours long. Better than any Star Wars movie, imo.

Anime for Non-Anime fans:
-Almost anything from Studio Ghibli
-Grave of the Fireflies
-Wolf Children
-Berserk
-Cowboy Bebop
-Code Geass
-Death Note

I'm sure I've missed a lot but that's a good start :)

Once you turn 18 you can only watch live action crap with adult characters.

Lol. Funny, yet sad that so many subscribe to this line of thinking...

TL;DR - Watch it.

Cowboy Bebop is really the only animé you need.

Definitely an excellent starting point. Trigun is equally as entertaining.
Dont watch berserk, read it. Finding scans and translation on Interet isnt hard.
People really need to lose this mindset that some things are for kids and others aren't. Just watch what you enjoy. It's a great anime and it is an american one. Most animes are from japan. Watch it. My guess is you will like it if you bother asking about it.

These two along with Samurai Champloo are some of my favorites. They all have such incredible music. And they've got great dubs. They all have kind of similar feel though: episodic stories with a subtle melancholy mood, lots of bitter-sweet moments and tragic characters. I wanted to come up with a really diverse list for non-anime watchers.

Yeah, I've read a bit of it. I still prefer the anime though. I've never been too big on comics/manga. Sound is really important to me. Part of me hopes they'll continue/reboot it someday.

One major thing you need to take into account is, a lot of Korra fans were much younger when The Legend of Aang originally aired. And while it was a cartoon TV series designed for children, it was much better than your typical cartoons since it had an actual overall plot to the story. Which would definitely attract older audiences since it had a well thought out consistant plot that had a beginning and end to it. Unlike most cartoons where they're just a bunch of random skits designed to just make you laugh and keep you entertained for 20 minutes or so.

But Avatar, actually has a story. Honestly, the Avatar series are more similar to Japanese anime than to Western cartoons. Which is why I personally like anime, they usually have a consistant plot that unfolds over time.

I'd bet that most of the Korra fans did watch The Legend of Aang when they were younger. And while I did watch it while I was younger, I didn't actually finish the story until I decided to watch it from the beginning when I was at college. And I loved it. Sure it had your typical kiddie cartoon parts here and there, but it did have an great deep emotional story, and really good character development. I can't believe something as good as Avatar was aired for kids who most wouldn't really appreciate the story at such a young age.

You truly get the best out of Avatar when you're older to comprehend everything in the story. If you're interested in starting Korra, I seriously recommend you watch The Legend of Aang first. I'm sure you'll be surprised by how good and interested the story is. And while I do prefer Korra to Aang, you get the most out of watching Korra by being a fan of the original series and just getting so many of their nods to the fans by referencing things from the original series.

And you really get to appreciate some of the cameos who make an appearance in Korra. If you watch Korra without watching Aang, you miss out on a lot of the emotion of the story.

The way I like to see Korra, is it's literally 100% for the fans. It just feels like that for me. Since the fans from the original are older, they've put on a more mature feel for Korra, if you compare Aang and Korra, Korra is definitely designed to entertain older audiences to an extent. There are some things in Korra that you wouldn't really expect in a children's cartoon, like murder and death, even a little blood here and there.

Because of all the Korra porn this fandom produces

I'm going to be honest, I just knew Korra from top quality rule34 popping out like crazy with other girls in this show.

I haven't seen the show and got no plans to watch it. I did finished The Last Airbender though during the early morning cartoons years ago.
they have some decent and entertaining storylines that are just fun to watch. it's a show full of adult characters and older teenagers, so it's not really standard Nick geared towards preteens.
I actually don't blame you for staying away from it because it's on Nick, I absolutely hate that it's on Nick and Nick is the stupidest thing in the world.

Avatar is so different from anything on Nick though, it really is a great show all around. Lots of emotions and stuff. You'd just have to give it a try with an open mind.

I definitely wouldn't relate it to My Little Pony, but I don't actually know much about that.

Ghost in Shell beats them all
For me it's just the kick a$$ animated action. Considering the TVY7 nature of the show (both the original and Korra) it's amazing they were even capable of making action scenes this exciting without blood or gore.

Korra isn't a Spin-off. Korra is the second show of the Avatar Series. Which is why all throughout the entire show you are constantly reminded that Aang is dead.
As garr says this isn't a spin-off...

Avatar: The Last Airbender is from the kids being kids to them growing up.

Avatar: Legend of Korra is about 40-50 years past the last series as Aang has passed away via old age, and the rest have grown to elderly of age.

Korra is the NEW Avatar, when one Avatar dies another is born. So Korra is the new cause well they want some variety.

=======

The whole comment about whether Korra is Bronie material..what isn't? There's groupies who fap off to everything now a days. You can look up Rule 34 for anything on the planet! You'd probably find people making porn outta characters made from vegtables and dip!
