ADULTS: Why is Avatar such a good show?
I don't typically watch animation especially anime, but alot of people think this is bad ass. I am curious as to why and how it is bad ass and I might give it a try. Also is Legend of Kora the spin off to Avatar? Why did they pick Kora? I've seen a few episodes of Avatar in the past and I thought she was just a supporting character. I only ask this because I find it semi creepy that adults are very excited for an animated Nickolodeon sweaty preteen girl...or is Kora a legit chaaracter or am I dabbling in bronie territory here?

Well the first thing you need to get out of your head is that animated = for kids. Its just another medium to deliver a story.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is nearly a masterpiece, the characters and their motives are so well written and the final episodes and climax is one of the most epic conclusion to a series ever.

The Legend of Korra is a sequel set 70ish years I think after the events of Avatar TLA. The story arcs for each season are darker and more mature because the target audience is people who watched ATLA as a kid which would be in adulthood by now.

Well... it is tempting Korra looks all grown up now i guess, but I definitely don't think she is of age even in the spin off...but haven't seen it yet, but this game and the weird overly excited fandom for Korra raises suspicions for me.

Korra is a 17 years old in season 1, 18 in season 2 and 3 and 21 in season 4.

So yeah, preteen? Not really.

She's also not a character at all in the original Avatar series. An extremely minimal amount of research would explain why.

It's possible that adults appreciate the series for it's deep characters, engaging plot, the excellent way it handles real world issues (Such as loss, price of war, personal responsibility), imaginative world, awesome action, great animation and great acting.

I don't necassarily think animation is just for kids, but the fact it's on "Nick" a network for kids made me steer clear. I very much like dark and mature themes, but I don't remember it being totally brutal, but I hear the story at least is indeed good.

They actually moved Korra off Nick tv network and put it on internet only basis, Nick isnt a good host for the show. There really isnt a proper network in america for more serious animation despite large cult followings always popping up when a good series comes along.

ref: the epic Trigon arc in Teen Titans, then they go and make a mockery with Teen Titans:Go!

Hmm? didn't know that. Did they take it off because the subject matter was to heavy? Does the show have like beheadings and brutul fight scenes? maybe not enough views? I would totally watch this if it fell between the lines of game of thrones and dragon ball z I'm getting that vibe from it, but when I was younger I don't remember it being as dark as some of the other late night anime I watched from time to time.. I'm gonna give it a try anyway because it's really NOT a Nickolodeon thing. Thanks for the sharing.. Still not sure how I feel about Korra though rule 34 is very strong with this one.

Just go watch it, its not exactly hard to find online or a torrent for it. It'd take you 22mins to find out wether you like it or not.

Eh the r34 crowd ruins everything, Korra is a good character shes pretty much the opposite of Aang from ATLA. As for it getting taken off air it was due to "low ratings" which I dont know all the details to, but the show certainly doesnt fit in with their other content and I would say they didnt really know how to handle it well.

While the violence isnt always explicitly shown, sometimes it is, its certainly implied. Without giving too much away if you plan to watch it there are political assassinations, suicide, poisoning . Etc.

Definitely give it a try though, you can watch Korra with a basic wiki readup of ATLA. Of course I would reccommend watching ATLA first for the full experience.

Once you turn 18 you can only watch live action crap with adult characters.

I like the Avatar shows because of the show's lore and themes; reincarnation, control over elements through martial arts, it's humor and various Asian aesthetics among the different nations.

My girlfriend likes it because of the various different characters and their interactions.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is comes first and is about a young Airbender named Aang, it's 3 seasons long. The Legend of Korra is the sequel series to The Last Airbender. It's about Korra who is a Waterbender, and it's 4 seasons long, but two of the seasons are only 13, i think, episodes long.

The idea is that the Avatar is the bridge between the physical world and the spirit world, has existed for over 10,000 years and the only person who can master all 4 elements. Aang was the youngest Avatar in The Last Airbender and seeks guidance from some of his past lives. Korra is the next reincarnation of the Avatar after Aang.

The original series was intended for children, but it didn't shy away from important topics. It dealt with things like racism, imperialism, war, death, life, and peace. And tea. Lots of tea. It handled all of these themes in an age-appropriate way, and did so with a cast composed mostly of children, and entirely of non-white, non-Americans. That, itself, was pretty much an amazing feat.

The sequel series, The Legend of Korra, happens in the future and deals with things such as elitism, propaganda, terrorism, hate speech, and the whoring out of ancient spiritual disciplines for money as a sporting event. All, again, handled very well, but intended for an older audience--like Harry Potter's fandom, the series grew up with its original fandom and met them where they were/are now.

Both are very good (though I like the first one a bit better), and are definitely worth a look, even if you're a grown-up. :P

Korra as a supporting character in Avatar yet it's a spin-off to Avatar? This doesn't really make much sense, man, use your head. They also picked Korra because that is the show airing right now so it's relevant. And adults like the show because the storytelling is compelling and there is actual meaning as well as character depth. It's also a far better fantasy world than that other one that airs on a supposed "adult" network and seems to only be remembered for two things, sex and lizards. At the end of the day, despite it's disappointments and flaws, the show (referring to Avatar and Korra as a whole) leaves one satisfied and not overly pissed off like the one made for more plebian audiences. The irony of this is that the creators most likely watch the other show. You know which one I'm talking about.

p.s. Korra is spelled with two r's.
