In short yes
That doesn't mean a completely different story. And given the descriptions of the areas we can see in the game right now, the story through these first 2 areas sounds pretty similar.
Maybe it totally changes from here on out, but I'm kinda feeling that might not be the case.
but we can already see some deviations in the lore from original vindictus. i don't think the word 'wizard' was ever used in vindictus. shakar was also not referred to as the 'king' of the fomors, he was the high commander. there was no such thing as 'brig crystals' in vindictus and the kobolds in hoarfrost hollow were not mining anything. the biggest change is perilous ruins... in vindictus, the group of gnolls led by carminegust (yes, that's what i'm going to refer to him from now on even if he doesn't have that name in original vindictus) that detached from the fomor army had been residing in perilous ruins and the humans were aware of this fact. humans also had not abandoned perilous ruins, rather the crimson blades made perilous ruins their designated training site while the group of gnolls were residing there, as said group of gnolls residing in perilous ruins were peaceful and would not attack humans and were completely fine w/ the crimson blades training there. kirstie would even often visit these gnolls and converse w/ them as she spoke gnollish. but in defying fate it doesn't seem that this group of gnolls were ever peaceful w/ humans? and only recently "suddenly settled" in perilous ruins.
now these changes aren't particularly significant enough to alter the overall narrative of the story or any of the events therein, but it's definitely possible that more significant deviations are made as the story continues.
blood lord isn't even a vampire anymore. lol. which means vampires in general probably no longer exist. they weren't particularly significant to the story, but yeah.
taking a closer look at the ainle goblins, they appear to have growths on their bodies that sort of resemble the corruption from season 3, potentially indicating they've retconned the cause of the goblins becoming mindless.
the mercenaries are now PART OF THE ROYAL ARMY. lmfao. which that one is kinda big. because it was the pontiff's court that purposely caused the death of aodhan's family, which is why he left the royal army.
now this could mean any of a number of things... it could mean that the pontiff's court is no longer one of the main villains in defying fate, it could mean that aodhan is a beta male in DF who continues to work for someone who killed his family, it could mean they've retconned aodhan's story so he no longer has a family or that they never died, which could still result in the court no longer being one of the main villains.
now, the pontiff's court had nothing to do w/ "tieve round 1", it was morrighan who was slowly forcing tieve to manifest in erinn, and morrighan who took over her body once keaghan brought her to erinn. but it's still a pretty significant change.
here's something interesting tho. if the pontiff's court is no longer one of the main villains, then ingkells won't have a reason to rebel, which won't lead keaghan to start asking questions. there won't even be any questions for him to ask anyway. if he doesn't become a fugitive, then he probably will never end up in colhen to see tieve fading away to erinn...
