Win 10 problem, "Unable to load fonts"

Just DL'd Disciples SLG and can't get it to run on Win 10. While this forum lists several fixes, this problem isn't among them. When I click on the icon, a roughly 3/4 black screen comes up with an error box, "Unable to load fonts." I can't get around it by any fix suggested here and so far, the Steam support people haven't been much help. Any ideas?

Uninstall, and make sure to install on drive C... i had that same problem, with the 2 error messages. I was also installing to drive D, went in and noticed all the files were trying to run from drive C, so uninstalled and reinstalled to drive C and the game works great now.

Try editing "Disciples Sacred Lands Gold\Exe\DISCIPLE.INI". The original path is "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Disciples Sacred Lands Gold\globals". Change them to the current path. It should fix the problem. :)

Hi, I changed the file myself, it worked when I lauch the game from the folder (still crashes if I do it in Steam), but now I have a red screen and an error box :C

Hi, I never meet this problem before, but if I switch to desktop and then go back to the game it will become red screen. I just found a way to fix it:
- Open "Disciples Sacred Lands Gold\Exe\DISCIPLE.INI", change DDraw=1 to DDraw=0
(I tried to use Config.exe to disable DirectDraw, but it didn't work. So I edited the ini file instead.)
- Open properties for Disciples.exe, use force 640x480 resolution.
Then there is no more red screen, though a new problem comes out: the resolution of my desktop also become 640x480. It will get normal when I use Alt+F4 to quit the game.
I think perhaps this will work for your problem, too :D
(btw, the gog version seems to work perfectly on Win10, you can find it on gog.com )

@Pangurban Thanks for advice. My situation was that the game was on C: drive, but not in Program files, therefore the different path for files. I changed path not only for globals, but for everything that have path as well, no reason to hang with unexisting path.
Another thing I noticed is that CD drive letter was set to be D: (I don't have any DVD on laptop and D: is data drive btw), so I changed it to imaginary letter (F: in my case). No red screen or whatsoever. Although it has parameter not to ask for CD as I understood, but who knows what request it can send to CD drive, that is actually hard drive. Maybe this will help someone.

As Pangurban in his last post mentioned, you open .ini file in text editor and change text in certain lines that contain file paths

I know it's an old thread. I changes the .ini an the error with the fonts did disapear, buit know the game just won't open. I got an Disciples.exe.crash.txt but i can't understand anything in there.

Changed the diciple.ini to currend path & DVD letter.

Steam starts the game, but a window appers "Programm doesn't work"

[ESP] Instalenlo exactamente donde viene por defecto el archivo .ini, es decir en "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam", ahí me funciono. Luego con respecto a minimizar el juego, se me vuelve negra la pantalla del juego cuando vuelvo, la solución de Pangurban funciona, pero TODO windows se me pone a esa resolucion MIENTRAS el juego permanece abierto.

[ENG] Install it exactly where the .ini file comes from, that is, in "C: \ Program Files (x86) \ Steam", that's how it worked for me. Then with respect to minimizing the game, the screen of the game turns black when I return, the solution of Pangurban works, but EVERY Windows is put to me that resolution WHILE the game remains open.

For me, the solutions listed here didn't work, the game wrote the same: unable to load fonts.
I'm using Windows 10. But, I managed to run the game later.
Since it took me a couple of days, I’ll describe it here too so you don’t have to get tired.

Open the disciple.ini file.

Then look for:

DDraw = 1

Set to 0.
(If it was 0, leave it at that).

Then find it below:

C: \ Program Files (x86) \ Steam \ steamapps \ common \ Disciples Sacred Lands Gold \ globals

Then rewrite the drive letter to the drive where your game is.
AND WRITE EVERYTHING, to the very least! Only then will it work.
If you only rewrite the first one, it won’t work. You have to rewrite each drive letter.

So, if Steam has the game installed on your D drive, rewrite the first line to do this:

D: \ Program Files (x86) \ Steam \ steamapps \ common \ Disciples Sacred Lands Gold \ globals

And then for EVERY line, the 'D'
write the drive letter there.

Then it will work.

Not going to lie took me forever to find out what .INI was but i figured it out for anyone hoping to play this incredible game but get the error "Unable to load fonts" well you are in luck.

Now if you are like me and have no computer sense but can you deductive reasoning plus having the tenacity of a 4 year old wanting candy. Then you are in luck.

The file everyone is talking about is the DISCIPLE config settings file. What you want to do is.

Step

1. Head to steam
2. Right click Disciples Sacred Lands Gold
3. Click on Properties
4. Click on Local Files on right hand side
5. Open File Exe
6. Open DISCIPLE configuration settings file

Now that you have that file open congratulations you are almost finished. Now for me my game installed in just a Folder named SteamLibrary. Not Program Files (x86). But whatever the path maybe you have will be easy to remedy. When you fist open the ".INI" file or the config settings file. You want to change the DDraw=1 to DDraw=0 it will look like this.

; 0 - don't use DirectDraw (slower); 1 - use DirectDraw
DDraw=0

It will be up to you if you want to change DSound to 0 or keep it at 1. After that scroll down and look for something that looks like this. You cant miss it its way at the bottom.

Once you change the path to you specific path that you may or may not have done then you should be able to launch from either the Steam client or of the Shortcut on your desktop.
