Vanguard Princess is an anime-styled, ecchi, 2D, indie-fighter where you fight using two characters - your point character and her assist. The entire roster consists of female characters drawn in ecchi style, so expect lots of fanservice, panty shots and heavily animated busts - if you're into that sort of thing. To top this off, the game runs at 100 fps, so everything is extremely smooth.

The game itself seems simple enough at first - the engine is that of a basic anime fighting game, there are only four buttons (light, medium, hard and assist) and the commands for the special moves are standard fare for the genre. What makes the game stand out is that there is no feature that allow move cancels - normals, throws, special moves, supers etc all have to be done separately from each other. Even basic 2-in-1 combos are only possible because of links.

But here's where your partner comes in. So one of your buttons is dedicated to performing attacks with your assist character, the trick is they can move and attack independently of your point character. With clever use of tandem attacks you can create tricky setups reminiscent of Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 - attack them high and low at the same time, sandwich your opponent between you and your assist, take turns attacking to create a chain of attacks that combos, etc. You can also create combos via counter-hits which are very important in the game, as they tend to open the opponent up for additional free attacks. There's a lot of depth to be found here but it takes some getting used to, especially if you're already into other, more traditional, fighters.

Arcade mode can be brutal until you get the hang of it and even then the AI is no slouch. It's easy to get overwhelmed by their aggressive patterns, and if you're not already familiar with the concept - the final boss will introduce you to the SNK boss syndrome in the harshest way possible.

Even though the Vanguard Princess is now pretty old, I like it a lot. I play a LOT of fighting games, and I can tell you that this is one of the more unique entries into the genre. The game is cheap, works great with a 360 pad, runs on Windows 7 without problems and it's is still being supported with updates, tweaks and new content, even five years down the line.

I bought this game for the in depth combat system, high resolution graphics, quality production values, and oh who am I kidding I bought this for the same reason everyone else did. PLOT and BACKSTORY

So... Um.. What was the difference between the normal and the Director's Cut version? I mean, shouldn't there be at least some form of nudity if in the description it does say "uncensored"? I feel kind of ripped off, even if the DLC was free. Game's fun though, if you like jiggling plot, and non-linear plot curves.

There is a huge learning curve, moreso if you are a novice at fighting games. The game almost expects you to be a master at it from the get go.
The visuals are pleaseing to the eye. Overall this game can be fun once you get the hang of the controls.

The Directors cut unlocks more rich deep narative in this complex and compeling universe 10/10
