Crash on Start / Missing Background Image

[Possible Solution 1]
You need Portal 2 and Aperture Tag installed on the same harddrive, as they read files from each other.

[Possible Solution 2]
-Right-click Aperture Tag in your Steam Library
-Properties - Launch Options - Type -w 1920 -h 1080 (or your own native resolution)
-Properties - Local Files - Verify Integrity of Game Cache

Hi everyone.
I just got the game from Steam, but it won't launch, plain and simple. When I try starting the game from Steam, all I get is a black screen during a fraction of a second prior to crashing back to desktop, with no error message whatsoever.
- verify Portal 2 cache
- set your resolution:
Right-click on the game -> Properties -> Set Launch Options
Enter something like "-w 1920 -h 1080" (this is for 1920x1080, enter your main resolution)
I have it up and running under Windows. But the Linux version is still broken.

Thank you. Customising the resolution did the trick.

Hi there, I'm having the same problem. Immediately crashes without an error. I'm using a Mac 10.6.8 and have Portal 2 on the same hdd.

Same setup here. Some help for Mac Users who bought this game and whose specs match would be appreciated.

If the game flickers on and then closes instantly, try this;

Right-Click Aperture Tag in your Steam Library
Properties
Launch Options
Type -w 1920 -h 1080 [or whatever your native resolution is]

Oops! Fixed! Sorry about that. Thank you for the correction there! =)

Cheers for the advice! Unfortunately it didn't work for me. I'll also mention that I've tried launching with -safe, verifying cache, and an unistall/reinstall (with computer restarts all in between) and nothing has worked. Same as before, the game opens and immediately closes again with no error/crash report. (Portal 2 is definitely on the same HDD/I'm running OSX 10.6.8)
Tested under Linux again by following the instructions. Still dies after the Bink logo.

No fix? Would it be best to just give up? (I'm asking sincerely.)

Much in the same boat as limnides.

Working in Software Support, I do understand that complex systems (and games are) do take time. But some acknowledgement from the developers would be appreciated for those of us who have purchased the product but cannot experience it due to the issues.

Sorry for the inconvenience! It seems as if all the issues stem from users with Mac OS 10.6.8. The team is currently looking into this. I don't think many of the team own Macs, so it can be difficult to debug internally at times. =(

In the meantime, anyone experiencing issues should try these possible solutions:

Right-click Aperture Tag in your Steam Library
-Properties - Launch Options - Type -w 1920 -h 1080 (or your own native resolution)
-Properties - Local Files - Verify Integrity of Game Cache

I've tried all of the above for Linux and it always tries to verify one file (after the crash), and adding a native resolution to the launch options doesn't do anything either. Is there some kind of dependancy missing? Because Portal 2 vanilla runs fine.

Random idea: Try start TWTM on that OS. Will it start normally? I'm testing Perpetual Testing Initiative for TWTM (and trying to fix it for Tag on Linux using mono), and experienced many strange crashes, when all three games (P2, Tag and TWTM) have same bin folders and executables, two (of three) games works fine, but one (either TWTM or Tag) crashes with strange errors like "missing libuuid.so" (as it's for x64, and there is no x86 version now, I can build it, but why other two games works fine in the same time?!). And then that crash disappearing, but let's say vbsp_linux start crashing in the other mod.. WTF?!
#Magic. Do not touch.
