now it's only a source game.
A mod is a personal project by either a single individual or a team to alter the original content of a game in a way they deem appropriate. This should never be charged for, they're not creating a new game, they're altering the original to their vision, it's for fun and the passion of creation.
To the Garry's Mod comment, Garry's mod was never really a mod of anything, it was simply a sandbox inside the Source engine which he orginally used HL2 and Counter-Strike: Source as a base for content. It wasn't a Half-Life 2 mod or Counter-Strike: Source mod, it was a Source engine game using content pulled from other games...
I really think matching it with Garrys Mod is not any good either. And about indie games: well, since Steam´s early years many changed. I dont think only superextra AAA games are supposed to be on steam. Its a huge market now, and small devs just simply.. hope for better money when they try to sell an stupid, 12 years old game and want to billions... jeeez burn these people...pls.. I agree with you in this :| *shakes hands*
It doesn't matter if it's not going to be expensive, it's the principal!!
I'm going to use Natural Selection as an example.. It was a Half-Life 1 mod, it was an original idea, with its own level designs, its own gameplay, and it simply just used the half life 1 engine.. They later went on to do Natural Selection 2.. Which I believe uses their own engine.. Now that I don't mind paying for, because you can tell they put alot of work into it..
Where as here, they're simply selling a mod..
Theres a new Unreal Tournament game coming out as well.. And it's going to be free, you wanna know the catch? Modders are going to be selling their mods on this new UT and Epic Games will take a cut, that's how they plan on making money off of it..
Seriously, charging for mods damages PC gaming.. I don't mind paying for a game that started off as a mod, when it has an ORIGINAL idea and feels like a NEW game.. This however, doesn't look like a new game.. It looks like portal but with a different gun, it even says on the store page "start thinking with gels" which is copied straight from portal 2's "start thinking with portals"
The only reason I feel it is wrong that they're charging for this game, is simply because it's not an original idea and it's not a new concept.. Hell, store page even says you need Portal 2 installed to be able to play it!!
So I'm glad Aperture Tag has a price on it, as long as it meets the standard of that price. But if it was free, I'd be a lot less enthusiastic to play it. Valve are connecting themselves to this former mod, so that's a big deal and I'm sure they wouldn't risk their image with a sub standard product (that's just not Valve).
Keep in mind this is my opinion. You are entitled to have yours, as am I.
This is my opinion as well, and I'd have to see more of the game before making a final decision, but from first impressions it just feels to me like they've not done enough to make it feel like a game of its own
It's a new set of maps, with an altered ruleset : if Valve did this, they'd be calling it "DLC" and you wouldn't even care about paying.
So, a team did something, they want to be paid. Whether they're the orginal developpers or not doesn't matter, since they got the license anyway...
