So now Valve is allowing people to sell mods...
I'm just about done with this stupid platform, almost 11 years here and this crap is just becoming too much.

Zero quality control by Valve, broken games, 30 stupid indie games being added each day completely saturating the store so you can find absolutely nothing of value, Greenlight's failure to properly screen out garbage, Early Access games and now the sale of mods...

This is becoming too much, get your ♥♥♥♥ together Valve...

Garrys mod is not a mod. Its actually a game that runs on source.

first version was a mod http://www.moddb.com/mods/garrys-mod
now it's only a source game.

Wait, this isn't going to be some free mod?

It's ridiculous mindsets like yours and not understanding the context which set horrible precedents for the future.

A mod is a personal project by either a single individual or a team to alter the original content of a game in a way they deem appropriate. This should never be charged for, they're not creating a new game, they're altering the original to their vision, it's for fun and the passion of creation.

To the Garry's Mod comment, Garry's mod was never really a mod of anything, it was simply a sandbox inside the Source engine which he orginally used HL2 and Counter-Strike: Source as a base for content. It wasn't a Half-Life 2 mod or Counter-Strike: Source mod, it was a Source engine game using content pulled from other games...

So...why are we here exactly?, They want to sell a mod, whats the problem? Its not going to be that expensive, and if Valve allowed them to get some money from thier work...yeah you might not like it and you are free to tell your opinion, but there is still a fight between 5% of people who dont like it and the 95% who actually agree and are waiting for the game to come out.
I really think matching it with Garrys Mod is not any good either. And about indie games: well, since Steam´s early years many changed. I dont think only superextra AAA games are supposed to be on steam. Its a huge market now, and small devs just simply.. hope for better money when they try to sell an stupid, 12 years old game and want to billions... jeeez burn these people...pls.. I agree with you in this :| *shakes hands*

Yeah sorry I'm not paying for a mod. Like OP said, Greenlight is a failure, Valve has their heads up their asses and they're not even a video game company anymore. They allow the worst of games to get voted and greenlit by a community of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that think some of these games are genius works of art only to go on Reddit and desperately try to make memes off of them to popularize such filth. Valve has played a crucial role in the destruction of indie development. Now, any idiot with an engine license can have anything put up on Steam's store page and charge people for it. Gabe said Greenlight was going away, that was over a year ago. Losing faith in Valve very steadily now and looking at GoG.

They said it will be free, but now it will be 6.99$ and for the first Week 30% off

It doesn't matter if it's not going to be expensive, it's the principal!!

I'm going to use Natural Selection as an example.. It was a Half-Life 1 mod, it was an original idea, with its own level designs, its own gameplay, and it simply just used the half life 1 engine.. They later went on to do Natural Selection 2.. Which I believe uses their own engine.. Now that I don't mind paying for, because you can tell they put alot of work into it..

Where as here, they're simply selling a mod..

Theres a new Unreal Tournament game coming out as well.. And it's going to be free, you wanna know the catch? Modders are going to be selling their mods on this new UT and Epic Games will take a cut, that's how they plan on making money off of it..

Seriously, charging for mods damages PC gaming.. I don't mind paying for a game that started off as a mod, when it has an ORIGINAL idea and feels like a NEW game.. This however, doesn't look like a new game.. It looks like portal but with a different gun, it even says on the store page "start thinking with gels" which is copied straight from portal 2's "start thinking with portals"

The only reason I feel it is wrong that they're charging for this game, is simply because it's not an original idea and it's not a new concept.. Hell, store page even says you need Portal 2 installed to be able to play it!!

From my experience of Steam released mods, I'm not impressed. Because something is free it's pretty much an excuse to forget about standards. Now if something has a price on it, then we should expect a better experience right? Honestly now, how many people would pay money for NeoTokyo in its current state?

So I'm glad Aperture Tag has a price on it, as long as it meets the standard of that price. But if it was free, I'd be a lot less enthusiastic to play it. Valve are connecting themselves to this former mod, so that's a big deal and I'm sure they wouldn't risk their image with a sub standard product (that's just not Valve).

I feel like that if they've put a ♥♥♥♥ ton of work into the mod, and it actually looks and plays great, and has a bunch of new content, it's ok to sell it. This is one of those mods that deserves it. They have a whole new campaign with voice acting, new test elements, hell, even an in-game level editor. I'll be getting this day one, because I want to support the developers.

Keep in mind this is my opinion. You are entitled to have yours, as am I.

I'm just interested in discussing it.. If they put enough work into it to warrent selling it, then that's fair enough.. But it's just first impressions it doesn't look like the games done much to seperate itself from Portal 2 and become its own game.. Like I said in the other thread, HL1 mods like counter-strike, natural selection, zombie panic, team fortress.. None of these games were like half life 1, they were their own games but used the HL1 engine.. Where as to me, this looks like it doesn't do much to become its 'own' game and sits too close to portal 2 for my liking

This is my opinion as well, and I'd have to see more of the game before making a final decision, but from first impressions it just feels to me like they've not done enough to make it feel like a game of its own

What's the big problem in charging for a mod?

It's a new set of maps, with an altered ruleset : if Valve did this, they'd be calling it "DLC" and you wouldn't even care about paying.

So, a team did something, they want to be paid. Whether they're the orginal developpers or not doesn't matter, since they got the license anyway...
