Usual performance issues with Krita do not appear with thumbnail lag, but with actual canvas lag. This is why I am thinking that you really should look the problem elsewhere.
I have not found away to disable layer thumbnails. There does not seem to be setting for it. I do know how to disable thumbnail popups, but that is unlikely to be an issue here.
I would agree that it's overall probably my system however it's odd because it seems to be an inconsistent issue. If I make a new canvas and start adding random strokes at the same exact resolution I get no issues updating thumbnails or even if I go to a piece with over 15+ active layers and do the same no issues either. However on a sketch with only 5 layers it happens every thumbnail update.
My only guess is the fact that I resized everything to be a bit bigger and used anti-aliasing to remove some blur but past that I have no clue what else it could be. Thanks for the reply though sucks that I can't just outright disable the feature, I'll just have to figure it out I suppose
