Krita

Any advantages over Photoshop, SAI or paintshop pro?
For an artist, are there any spectacular advantages in Krita Gemini over the most common and advanced painting applications, including Photoshop?

(The norm: SAI is good for character work. Photoshop is good at digital painting and digital image composition. Paint Shop Pro is the wrong Corel Application, it's Corel Draw. Corel Draw is good for clean Illustration.)

Krita(not Krita Gemini yet) works on the big three full operating systems, Windows, Linux, and Mac.

Krita is opensource on Linux. SAI, Corel Draw, and Photoshop are commercial.

Krita is less expensive than all the above mentioned software.

Personally though, the tilt pencil that someone showed me here is quite snazzy, the shift middle click for canvas rotation(like the middle click for 3d software), and the dockers art is neat. Software ends up falling into certain specialties for a reason, though, so beating Corel Draw at clean Illustration, or beating SAI at character work is not going to happen. Beating Photoshop at digital painting, maybe.

Thank you for a profound answer, the last statement made me most curious.

@Atermi You can try out the full desktop features by downloading the free Krita Desktop[www.kritastudio.com]. (be sure to enable OpenGL in the Settings dialog, for best performance)

The demo on the store page lets you use the Sketch interface.
Krita Gemini lets you switch quickly between Desktop and Sketch modes (automatically if you have a 2 in 1 convertible laptop - Intel used it to demonstrate principles of changing interfaces on these devices: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLwFJ0jF37s). We're integrating with Steam features so you can install it on multiple machines and have your brushes and favourites ready on each. Plus, with Steam's automatic updates, it keeps Krita Gemini up to date with new features and improvements.

Other comments some of the artists have made suggest that they like that Krita has multiple, powerful brush engines which you can use to create a variety of effects, also a variety of blending modes too.

@southpawami Thanks for your reply - always feel the opinion and advice from other artists is more useful, and carries more weight :)

Thank you very much, I'll make sure to try the trial version from the site as soon as I have time.

Can I use the Steam version without Steam on? I can't connect to Steam at the office.

@Atermi Indeed you can, you can launch Krita directly from the installation folder. A few people asked for this. Obviously it won't have access to the Steam features then, but continues to function fine.
Krita Desktop is a fully featured program - we hope that the additional sketch interface, steam integration, convenience of the updates via Steam and the direct support help convince you to choose Krita Gemini :)

I personally prefer Krita over Photoshop and SAI, it's a matter of personal preference though. I love Krita's brushes, key shortcuts and overall workflow. To me it's the little things that I love the most. It just feels right. The only piece of software I use more often is Manga Studio 5, but that's mostly because Krita isn't out for OSX yet. If it was, I'm sure I'd only be using Krita.
SAI is too simple for me, I can do what SAI does with Krita as well, and more. And I think it's silly that Photoshop has become such an industry standard for digital painting, while it's clearly not developed with painting in mind, it's the best image-editing software around, but I'd much rather paint with Krita, Manga Studio 5 or Corel Painter.
