It's more like a convenience kind of thing, although Krita Gemini wasn't available for free, only Krita. If you want Krita on Steam, then you have to pay. If you want Krita through the Windows 10 Store then you have to pay.

Krita is a free, open source, and community-driven project. Most of the development is done by passionate users and programmers from the Krita community who are volunteering their time and skills for free to make the program better for everyone. On top of that, cash donations from our other members of the community allow the Krita Foundation to employ a few full-time developers.

In other words, Krita's development progress is directly tied and only made possible thanks to the time and money contributions of members of our community - the more time and money that we put into the project, the more development accelerates, ultimately leading to a Krita that's better, faster, more stable, and with more features.

Krita is a free and open source program, so you don't have to pay! But, buying on Steam (or another store) is just one way of directly supporting the development of Krita, with a couple of added perks (like automatic updates). If you don't want to (or can't afford to) buy Krita on Steam, just go get it from the website for free or build it from source, and you can decide if want to make a contribution later or take part in our yearly fundraiser.

Krita is not just a program, it's a community. No matter how you get it, we hope you have fun and we really appreciate any support. Thanks.

why not make the base program free then have support purchases like how DLCs are sold?
could even have some artwork attached

some burgers here only love to stay to their 1-language mammy and daddy perspective and call themself "inelegance" if they spoke broken french/germany/japaneses
It is funny they can't handle a mistake with "e" even if their language is just based on slang on slang most like all other languages.

maybe go fix your government with their pay2live ambulance with their scammy unreturned tax with their 9999999 USD for stupid X-ray like 2nd/3rd world-class and leave non-English speakers alone we get tired of your non-sense grammar/spellings with your UK/USA/AUS different rules, we don't care about perfection we care about communication so gtfo with your oxford spell checking on internet slang word.

I've paid yesterday, i'm trying to learn digital workart, and i love donato to small and big projects, it's a great way to thank them.
I've used Krita for small projects off and on for about five years, figured I should finally pay for it. Having it on steam tracks time spent on it and, well, it allows you to launch it on steam so I just like that too.
