Yes. Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a fantastic game, great storyline, great artwork. Get the complete pack - the original Deus Ex is awesome too, and The Missing Link is a great expansion to DX:HR.
It's not something I would do, because you have to be completely out of character in the prologue to do it -- you're a *security chief* armed only with a combat rifle, facing multiple unknown assailants killing the people you're supposed to protect. If you *don't* shoot them, you're the world's worst security chief and probably a paid-off traitor.
Makes the game way more challenging.
OP, yes you can go through and not kill anyone except bosses. There is an achievement for doing so. It's really difficult but it's possible. Save often because every now and then you could trigger open conflict and a stun gun / tranq rifle / spam punches and energy bars might not save you haha
For the first two at least.
For Barret's fight, get him near one of those gas containers and blow it up, stun him while he's there and he'll eventually choke out. Remember, gas is non lethal.
Done that a few times myself.
For Fedorova's fight, it's kind of hard to do, but you can keep stunning her until she eventually passes out. Takes forever though.
Seen it done in a gameplay vid on youtube, you'll need a lot of stungun ammo.
And for Namir's I'm not sure. Been a while, but you could always try mixing different tactics including the onces above if you can manage it...
I also found this; "In the boss fight under Omega Ranch, it is possible to perform a take down on Namir. He must be cloaked, and in the middle of the animation where he jumps over the paneling (towards the player)."
It's listed as a bug on the Deus Ex wiki page.
I think for Zhao's fight, once you destroy all the mechs etc, you can use a gas grenade to incapacitate her.
While clever and resourceful, these tactics are ultimately unnecessary, as the achievement clearly stipulates that killing bosses is acceptable.
Again, not dissing, actually I'm applauding the resourcefulness it takes to pull some of these off. Just clarifying you don't HAVE to use them to get the achievement.
The only exception is the bosses. and there are a total of four bosses. Those you have no choice but to kill them. The programing of the boss fights were farmed out to another company by Eidos.
In the DLC "The Missing Link, you can get through all of it without killing anyone, including the Boss fight.
IMHO, the developers could have given the first three bosses more leeway by not scripting attack paths so much. There's a way to do this by adusting certain AI parameters so they move and react more randomly.
Namir's movements, for example, started to become quite predictable, so I could put money on which obstacles he would blindly jump over next, while I just stood there and waited to blast him.
I think most people who have played on the more difficult settings have noticed this, given the sheer number of rounds you suffer through...
I actually co-created an old Halo 1 mod that had this feature (you can still download it for anyone that's interested).
first boss, you can kill in 10 seconds by throwiing red and green canisters at him.
second boss you can kill quickly by baiting her into doing her attack on slectronics that backfire.
Third boss i think you can instakill by lethal takedwon when he jumps over something.
