Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

How well would this game run on an ATI 4850?
Finally set up a desktop, but while it's many MANY times faster than the laptop I've been using, it's not high end, particularly the GPU: i7-920, HD4850 512MB.

So Deus Ex HR is one of the games that's been in my backlog for a long time, but I've been unable to play it because of the laptop. So now that I have a system that can actually play the game, I gotta ask - is it worth playing now, at the settings this desktop will be able to do, or wait till I get around to upgrading GPU or getting a new system which is likely years down the line since I'm so freaking lazy (consider: I've been gaming on a 1.3GHz laptop w/Intel 4500mhd for 3 years.)

I would want to play at 1080p resolution and get a smooth framerate (45fps min), but the rest of the settings are negotiable. Obviously I wouldn't want to play the game if it looks/performs like ♥♥♥, similar to how I didn't want to play even Telltale games on the laptop.

As a frame of reference, Crysis opening level ran at 20-30fps on High @1080p, and froze after I tried upping to Very High (methinks the latest ATI drivers aren't too stable.)

The game ran well on my desktop 4850 1GB with high settings and 1280x1024. 1080 should be perfectly playable as well.

Cool, thanks! Now to decide whether to wait for director's cut, and if so whether to wait for it to be on sale, assuming the 75% discount will apply on top of any sale :)
Easy task. Very nicely optimized game engine. 1080p with 4850 1GB was a nice gameplay experience for me.
Well, your CPU is still a potential powerhouse if you clock the hell out of it. I have an i7 930, which is pretty much the same, clocked from 2,8 ~ 4,2 with good chassis airflow and H80 cooling. The only game I can remember where the CPU was the bottleneck was X3: Terran Conflict. And that because it only supports single-core.

3 years and change after I bought it, I've switched out the graphics card 3 times or so - and the ol' i7 is still going strong.

And I actually had an Ati 4850 (one of only two Ati cards I've ever had, I believe), and it's probably the most stable, consistent graphics card I ever had. Pretty powerful as well.

I see you've bought the game now, so this post is mostly just me reminiscing, lol. How does the game run for you?

By the way; I see you have a huge game collection - have you really only been playing on a laptop until now?

So far it hasn't been very stable for me - froze twice in Crysis when I upped it to Very High, and once in Gianna Sisters when I alt-tabbed out and launched GPU-Z.

Also Torchlight 2 has a weird issue where sometimes when I check the inventory in town the framerate drops to 1fps.

Could just the the latest ATI drivers I installed a few days ago, I dunno. Could also be heat related - temps regularly hit 90s when I'm gaming. I should probably open it up and dust it out or something, I'm definitely way too lazy to buy & install an aftermarket cooler.

Actually I've had the game since it was in an Amazon pack for $10 maybe a year ago - but I have a very slow connection (768kbit) and I'm not the only one using it so....

Only for the last 3 years since my previous desktop (C2D E8400, GTS 250) broke down and I was too lazy to fix it. Actually if the 4850 continues giving me problems, I might just sidegrade it to the 250 from the old system, that one should still work unless it burned out along with the mobo & CPU...

This i7 box I got from a coworker who decided to go full-Mac for some reason.
I would definitely check the fan / cooling fins for dust. Use compressed air for maximum effect (air in a can). One thing I like to do is run a benchmark, write down the end temps, remove dust from fans and do the same benchmark. I've seen double digit temp decreases before. Thankfully I have a case with dust filters all around now, which really cuts down on the maintenance.

You're right on the money with the sidegrading comment - http://www.hwcompare.com/2126/geforce-gts-250-1gb-vs-radeon-hd-4850-512mb/

And if you want to take a crack at overclocking your cpu, this thread will help you out - http://www.overclock.net/t/538439/guide-to-overclocking-the-core-i7-920-or-930-to-4-0ghz
