I then found Jeff's grave and resurrected him.
I figure it was just a tutorial of how to rez a dead character, and forcing Jeff to die regardless of which circumstance he was in currently (whether in an auto-party, or resting). It didn't require a restart of the game so fortunately it wasn't something that prevented the game from continuing, though I did have to replace him in the party for the time-being.
....for real? Jeff has never died for me... Maybe because I always play on Ironman?
You can just re-hire another Warrior and call him Jeff if you want.
