Dosn't matter what you call it, it's the best game ever created anyway.
Matters to me, because I will generally automatically filter away any game with the tower defense label on it, so I almost missed this one. God I hate that genre!
Part of what defines tower defense to me is having "hordes" or "waves" of enemies coming in (and moving a lot more predictably than in this game) that you take out one by one with upgrades you earned after each round. This game sure ain't that nonsense!
i dont want to spoil anything but get it in this bundle:
http://www.bundlestars.com/all-bundles/masters-of-strategy-bundle-2/
Oh I already got the game, through that very bundle. That's how I discovered it!
Well see, that's exatly what happens in this game. They just took the meaning of "waves of enemies" a bit too literal, if you catch my drift.
Oh yeah? What are some other good ones?
I also saw a negative review where someone said it's crap because it's not really a Tower Defense game. It's misleading even fans of the real Tower Defense genre!
I DEMAND THAT THE TOWER DEFENSE TAG IS REMOVED POST HASTE!
I second that, Defenders Quest is amazing. Plants VS Zombies and Dungeon Defenders is great also.
There are a lot more maps on the side wormholes. SO MANY more maps! Ah.... :)
I totally recommend this game if you like, ahem, tower defense, or RTS (real-time strategy like Command & Conquer / Supreme Commander). Very good game, just download the demo, like I did before buying the game.
For me, this beats Defense Grid 2 hands down in:
- story (sci-fi post-apocalypse),
- smooth gameplay (no bugs at all, amazing!),
- replay (many, many more maps, plus random map regenerator)
Pure org-asm! (steam doesn't allow actual word... strange)
Anyways, Creeper World 3 is not a turret/tower defense. I would classify it as a real time strategy game. The primary reason is because you can move your units. A turret defense, by preventing you from moving most, if not all, of your units, turns the game into a spacial puzzle. The way you lay your towers out and the way you organize your maze, potentially causing the enemies to pass into a damage zone more than once, is the core of the gameplay, and is essentially a puzzle. With Creeper World 3, and other RTS games, the emphasis is on neutralizing enemy strongholds and capturing resources, things you do not do at all in a tower defense game. They aren't really puzzle games as much as they are tactics and strategy games.
That said, there are definitely maps in this game that play out much more like puzzles. But the game mechanics are still far more RTS than they are TD.
This game has alot of depth, too much depth, depth that is endless and goes so deep you'd think eternity was over eternities ago... but I do think thats not a bad thing... just something you can overlook in this ever cluttering catalog of medicore games in this genre.
I think Tower Defenses now, is the similar thing MOBA's are doing now... or any thing thats taken from a UMS map of SC/WC... its oversaturated of 100s of people doing the same thing that the 5-10 that shine are worth your time, and the rest is something you glance and buy on the cheap.
For example, looking at the hacking genre on steam, only really uplink and the hacker evolution games fit into that genre, the other games are listed because they simply have some type of hacking system within the game.
So yes, it most certainly shares some similar concepts with TD, but that is just part of the game, it is not purely a TD game, it however shares enough similarities to TD to have the tag included.
You defend your base, you build towers but that is where the similarities end.
