Anime turned me off :(
I like the concept - but for space sims a level of immersion matters - now I'm not looking for Star Citizen class graphics - naturally considering this is Indie with almost insignificant budget - but Anime?
Anime characters and space sims don't gel!!

I've played all of the old Wing Commander games and I still play Freespace 2 off the original disks that I bought when it first came out.

There have been a number of recent games that have promised to be the spiritual successor to Wing Commander. Of all the games that are already out, this is one of the best.

The anime isn't part of the gameplay. If you let the fact that you don't like it cause you to miss this game, its your loss. No one is forcing you to buy or play it.

This is a developer that supports his product and is providing free additional content. Complaining about the cutscene artwork isn't useful.

Eterium has gone strength to strength and as mhsiea states is one of the best out there for this type of game. After playing for a while you tend to forget the Anime and get absorbed into the game anyway...

Also what makes this game special is the support !!
Its second to non......These guys must be reading 24/7 to ensure they answer any problems.
The updates have been requested features and now the "FREE" Act II has been added with a further 27 missions..

Its a fantastic game and worth every penny :)

This is like complaining you don't like Bioware games because the character portraits are hand-drawn or w/e..

Space and Anime don't mix? lol....

Don't let the character design put you off, you'll miss one of the best space fighting games in recent times.

If you can watch Star Wars with jar jar binks ....Then the anime in this isnt even close to being a problem :)

Anime characters and space sims don't mix? Macross, Gundam, Knights of Sidonia, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Titania, battleship yamato to name a few of the greatest space themed shows ever created - I think what you mean is in your opinion Anime characters and space sims don't mix. Which is fine and dandy but saying that anime characters and space sims don't mix is a rather sweeping statement. The developers made a stylistic choice, and I for one like it. A better thing to be concerned about is the lack of inflight comms chatter. missing out on the death cries of wingmen takes something away from a space combat sim.

Anime and space dont mix?? Have you seen the anime movie Titan A.E.?

Blink Jul 11, 2014 @ 9:03am
Titan A.E was 20th Century Fox, actually.

As I said before, your loss. What exactly is the point of commenting on a game you haven't played and don't intend to play?

I have the same feeling with OP, anime just puts me off.

Im not complaining though, and I respect the artwork designer.

Balrog1978 - I understand what you're saying. I loathe turn based games. Each time I come upon what looks like a great space themed game only to discover it employs turn based combat it is such a disappointment.

I'm not a big fan of cartoon animation; luckily it isn't as much of a deal breaker for me. I much prefer the kind of graphics utilized in the Mass Effect trilogy since it doesn't interfere with becoming immersed in the game.

Everyone has their preferences - fortunately there are a lot of space themed games under development so perhaps there are a few that you will really enjoy. Good luck!

@mhslea - Denigrating comments because you don't agree with them is pointless. No game will suit everyone's tastes, no matter how ingenius the design. What exactly is the point of a comment section if the only comments posted are those heaping praise on the game? As a writer, I zoom right in on negative reviews because they help me to decide how to craft what I write. I want to know what works and what doesn't. I'm sure the developers appreciate it when gamers articulate features that don't sit right with them. I want to know why someone didn't like my stuff. I'll bet these developers are no different.

we share at least that in common - I hate Turn Based too - for some reason - every single ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game coming out there is turn based. I;m just glad Bioware didnt jump on that band wagon - imagine Dragon age as yawn-based?

To Xena, what exactly was denigrating? Of course you shouldn't buy a game if you don't think you'll enjoy it. What doesn't make sense to me is starting a thread to say that based on factors other than actually playing the game, you wouldn't buy it. What exactly is the point?

For what its worth, I'm not a fan of the anime in this game, but its just a way to tell the story.

The orignal Wing Commander games used barely animated drawings in the same way. They then moved to video that starred well known actors. Pretty much no one does that anymore.

The actual gameplay in this game isn't anime. If you don't like the cockpits, which look a lot like the ones in the original Wing Commander games you can turn them off.

If you tried the demo and didn't like it, that's fine too. What I and others on this forum didn't get is an attack on a game where someone is in essence saying that they would never even try it because of one feature that has nothing to do with gameplay.

That's certainly your right, but I fail to see how that helps the developer. I've heard him on podcasts and he's talked about that decision a number of times. Although I don't want to speak for him, and you can see he is regularly on this forum, he's said that its an issue of whether you want the resources to go to the missions, or to the artwork. Personally, I think he made the right choice.

I'm not arguing that forums should be restricted to positive comments. My point, which I'll reiterate here, is that people who like games of this type shouldn't let the artwork keep them from trying this game. There's a free demo, so there's no need to pay for the game to give it a try.

If you tried the demo and you don't like it, that's your right, even if it was because you couldn't get past your dislike of the anime. But just posting that you would never try something because of the art isn't useful.

And lastly, this isn't a turn based game and it doesn't have turn based combat.
