The HD pack isn't inherently "bad" it's just people don't like what they've done with some weapons.
I genuinely prefer both the HD and SD models for different reasons, but whichever I use is really up to how I'm feeling. Although I will admit that I somewhat wish Gearbox or whomever was in charge of the HD models kept the MP5 and Glock.
So it's almost like you have 4 versions of the guns

...and here you can obtain more info about the initial HD pack for HL:

Besides all that, even if all copies would be lost, the GoldSrc HD files could be easily recovered from 'Blue Shift', because MDL (model), VMT (valve material type) and VTF (valve texture format) files are not encrypted and can be decompiled/edited with some appropriate software; 'Blender' for MDL files, 'VTFEdit' for VMT and VTF files (the latter one may be edited even with 'Notepad').
There are also other small files associated to the models that I didn't mention (PHY, ANI, VTX and VVD), but they're also not encrypted thus there's no need for any extra archives, 'master' or template files.
Personally I like high quality, but I also like when everything mutually suits together and I can't say that about HL:S with the HD content enabled.
