Is it necassary to play the first game?

As the title says. I've both. The Unwritten Tales 1 and 2 but I feel more like to play the new game.

Well, it is not necessary but BoUT1 is awesome and I don't know how it feels to play it after part 2. If you play the first one first you'll be more attached to the characters and understand a bit more about them but it is not necessary since the dialogues roughly tell you what happened in part 1.

I'm thinking some of the references to the first game are a lot funnier knowing the backstory from Game 1. BoUT enjoys poking fun at everything including itself.

I would not say it is necassary but as Shiro said you will understand some parts and the chars better. The first game is currently at 75 % discount here on Steam so it would be a good option to get it now :)

youd still have fun. But you'd probably be confused. It is a direct continuation of the chatacter stories of the first game.

I know after playing the first chapter on early access I went back and played both Critter Chronicles and Book of Unwritten Tales, they can all stand alone and they all add to each other
