In terms of playerbase loss. The steep decline in the first weeks is to be expected of any game release as players try it and leave if it's not to their taste. The problem is BS has been bleeding players after the initial hype died down. I feel it can mostly attributed to the game being in EA as QOL patches take priority over content which leaves the remaining players bored.
Obviously i don't think the player loss can solely be blamed on it being an Early Access title but rather the core mechanics of the game itself are drawn out and unrewarding and offers very little of the MMO in the MMORPG experience.
Yeah, it's a bit annoying imo. It's also weird that we will have to revisit the same creatures AGAIN, instead of appreciating the new episode 5 creatures. Tier 1-2 of the stonemaw hill monsters I will never fight...
What are you losing?
You can't wear Episode 1 gear in Episode 2, you have to equip episode2 gear in episode2.
On top of which you have 4 factions of different gear to micromanage and deal with storage.
It's like the game STASH all over again.
Made for a niche crowd but long term the game mechanics become too repetitive when it doesn't introduce new fun things that make Brighter Shores stand out, instead it's more tedious and there are other games worth your spare time before good fun changes can be made to improve the mood, while somehow making new Episodes with content worth paying for and having something fun to do for the new players in the 2 free episodes that will encourage them to progress past the paywall.
Among other things you could lose.. your patience, trash day, your dignity, your afternoon, your weekend.. etc.. the game is pretty unforgiving if you play this for fun or are weird and crave capes.
Also the "Factions" you mentioned were just combat skill names - Guard, Scout, Minefighter and Watchman / Watchwoman. Personally I wish they kept those and just made them unique and different in regards to combat, like the typical class system of other games, but oh well. Anyway, they're all gone now and their associated skillcapes have turned into episode capes (which I also think is lame because I personally I wanted them to release episode capes as a focused update which made them look a little more interesting and not recycled from some older part of the game)
There are Factions in the game which players have to pick along the main story, which is seemingly permanent and will have more consequences over time (presumably - right now it's more or less just what gear you can equip) which locks you out of wearing the other two factions equipment - which mostly just affects how easy a time you have accessing certain elemental attacks in combat at the moment. They've mentioned allowing "off-faction fighting" in the future, at a penalty, so maybe in the future we'll be able to wear any faction equipment we want.
Ultimately the game is barebones and there's nothing to work towards other than levelling yourself up...which is pretty much in line with a brand new MMO (especially one going through some rough times when the entire community goes up in arms about certain design choices, causing them to have to backpedal and redesign entire parts of the game lol) but there should be more and more content being added over time, like any good MMO.
We'll just have to see where it goes.
