How is it a problem though? What is wrong with rewarding players that have played longer?
Should someone that starts playng the game 5 years from now be able to get rank 1 in leaderboards due to your "FOMO" logic?
Should they be given hundreds of gold upon login by clicking a button on a popup that says "hey, you haven't played this game for the few years it's been out so here's literally everything you could ever want/need cuz yaknow, only half of the FOMO phrase matters".
You're literally asking for 5 years from now players log in and and get 500 all skills, max cash, all holiday items, every quest done, etc because if they don't get that then it's "FOMO" cuz they weren't around when it was introduced and/or weren't playing long enough to obtain said perks.
The "line is drawn" from benefits of playing longer/sooner. Gold, Experience, Items, it's all the same.
We all acknowledge that there is a severe lack of content, and that the combat is flawed. People aren't just defending the game to their dying breath. It's just that your hill to die on is... a free santa hat transmog. Any active player already has all the hats or enough hats to easily trade their way to a full collection. It's just a massive non-issue. Meanwhile, some of us were around when RuneScape Classic did away with holiday items for 14 months thanks to people complaining nonstop about them. History shows that your complaints are more likely to make the 2024 Xmas hats MORE exclusive rather than less exclusive.
Nobody is saying make these hats the ONLY event they ever do. They're just saying don't make any of these seasonal events a one-and-done thing. How is that hard to understand?
Don't want hats flying into your inventory in 2025 or you're worried they'll clog up the event? Then add an NPC or something somewhere that lets you enable or disable the ability to collect more hats. Done!
There's zero actually decent, non-scumbag reasons to support discontinuing any item. At all. If you can only find self worth in your account because you have something that someone else does not (and cannot ever earn) then you need to readjust your way of thinking, lol. You should be taking pride in the fact you're fit to bursting with 500s that you earned before the game was "cool", that you were among the first to play the game and you never quit no matter what, or that you've never cancelled your premium membership for eleventy hundred weeks, that you've been "maxed" for so long you're keeping up with the updates whereas new players have to climb several mountains that you've already climbed, or whatever else. Those are "noble" things to take pride in.
Taking pride in the fact you have a hat someone else can never get is pathetic.
If the devs truly wanted to let players show off the fact they "woz ere 2K24" then they should add some other generic thing without tapping into regular seasonal event stuff. At least that wouldn't feel so terrible for new players PLUS it would actually be something special.
Pfft. I can't believe people actually defend this stuff. It's not even the FOMO aspect that bothers me - the whole "oh no, I must play RIGHT NOW!!!" stuff? That's down to the individual. It's just the fact this game isn't even two months old and we're already seeing discontinued stuff being added to the game. Christ.
Obvious sarcasm is obvious. Actually I always feel somewhat self conscious when someone does that to one of my posts, lol
However, I do think that the santa hat itself is an oddly iconic item to do this with. I wouldn't mind if future years have a red santa hat that goes sideways instead of backwards, or have different colors of the hat, but still allow red. Maybe then my black santa hat would be enough to appease me for having one of the first holiday drop items.
I'm hoping next year that add santa suits
The decision has already been made. Its done. Discontinued items are here. It's not possible for the devs to make them reoccurring after communicating otherwise without upsetting large amounts of people.
The only reasonable thing that can be done at this point is for them to be tradeable, which they already are. It was also never mentioned that they wouldn't be tradeable after the event. People just assumed that would be the case because the trading system hasn't been implemented yet, but interestingly a trading system has been implemented specifically for the hats and these hats alone. Priorities.
Can you feel the nostalgia?
This along with the planned rework for combat professions is the red meat that former RS players have been demanding and its coming.
