What is the point of gathering skills?
Title.

The experience of training them is worse than training any other skill. There’s loads of downtime, it takes too long to bank most materials, and you have to constantly be paying attention.

And what are your rewards? Items that you can buy from a vendor at a reasonably low price anyway? I don’t get it. I can’t even gather materials for my crafting skills to save money, because I need to have, for example, 50 levels in foraging to gather materials for level 20 potions.

What’s the point of that? Ingredients are never so expensive that it wouldn’t be a waste of time to gather them anyway, but it’s not even an option?

I genuinely don’t understand the point of these skills. Am I missing something?

Yes.

You can't indefinitely buy from vendors. Eventually they stop selling what you need and you are going to have to gather it instead. I believe this is at ~lv200.

It's also just another way to play the game. Ultimately, there is no point to even playing the game, except whatever meaning you choose to give it. Just because you, personally, have deemed them "worse" than other skills, doesn't mean they shouldn't exist. They exist, like everything in the game, as way for players to choose to spend their time ingame.

1) gangbusters money
2) if there's downtime you're doing it wrong
3) xp rates get absolutely ridiculous at higher levels

To hear the cute sounds bones make when you pick them up, I believe.

To have bigger total and to get bigger profit, so you can make your local enchantress rich and richer.

I gather ingredients, then while I am crafting them I tab over to another window to check my email, put on a new podcast episode, etc. I like having something to do that's quasi-afk while I'm listening to podcasts, so it works out in my case

Gathering is okay the moment you finished Spider’s Nest.

Why it’s needed? Simple, you need it for preparing the ingredients for potions and when you advance further to Episode Three, they will be needed for the boneswright skill.

Unless you want to spend endless amounts of silver into the materials.

gathering and foraging is required if you want to make most higher level potions at a profit. If you buy the items directly from vendor you will be losing considerable silver each potion, especially at higher levels.

its a balance. If you are given too much XP you blow past gathering items. too little and it feels likea slog. THere needs to be a balance between grinding the skill and feeling like you're storing supplies in ample quantities to use in other skills.
