How's this compare to OSRS ?
Seems like this game has 10x more players on steam right now which is interesting.

Does this game revive the magic of RuneScape in a new game ? Or is it nothing like the original game from this dev ?

This can't be overstated. A game looking this good, with almost zero loading screens, that only takes up 800mb of space, with this much content? If any other company would have made this game, it'd easily be a 20GB bloatfest with loading screens inbetween every zone, and stock audio and models used all over the place.

I feel like it's more accurate to compare it to RuneScape Classic's early years, but with RS2's (OSRS's) graphics.

nobody plays osrs on steam thats why the playercount seems low , most people are using runelite

If you expect this game to be like Runescape or a Runescape killer, you're already setting yourself up for disappointment. Big time.

There are a good amount of surface level similarities. It's a point-and-click that controls similarly, and is a has a somewhat medieval/renaissance-like fantasy setting. It is simplistic and easy to grasp.

But I think it would be a bad idea to go in expecting it to be like an alternative to Runescape. The progression system in particular is completely new, and you will be confused if you go in leveling up expecting it to be like Runescape. It is very different, and I'm not sure if anything really compares to it.

As for the feel, there are elements of it that reminds me of the magic of Runescape. From learning the skills, exploring the world, and picking my own path, it gives me the same feeling I got when I first started getting into Runescape years ago. It is a rare feeling and really good. Your mileage may vary, but if you like the vibe of Runescape, it may be worth a try.

This is a fun and cool relaxing game for like 50 hours. I reached total level 400.

Then you hit a mark where you don't feel like you're making any progress, because their's nothing to aim for.

No raids, no dungeons
Combat is the exact same no matter your level, just reskinned npcs.
No mechanics to keep you involved
Skills feel afk but not afkable

Smithing is basically 3 skills; one to make weapons for each classes (once again feels pointless)
Some skills are the exact same but with different name (gathering for exemple).

That said since there's nothing to work for (except skill capes, i guess?) i could see this game struggle hard to retain a playerbase.

Probably depends person to person, for me it surely compares very much to old-school runescape and UO with the playstyle, skilling grind, crafting and sense of discovery with the world building and questing.

Not so much with the combat right now, as it's structure is more like normal skilling, than organic combat (it's a bit closer to OSRS, but not even remotely close to UO).

On the other hand it's one of the most pleasant mmo starts i have every seen. In 50hrs i haven't ever seen even one bug.

It can not be overstated how well the launch went. Even day 1 had absolutely zero issues to my knowledge. That isn't just rare, it's completely unheard of, especially nowadays.

We're living in a time where not just MMO or competitive games always have launch issues, even singleplayer stuff does, all the time. We expect a rocky launch with frequent dc's and queues at this point, so this was very surprising and refreshing to witness.

TBH i think it's due to the low player count;
I never saw it go past 20k

Other MMOS got over 100k people rushing the servers right away as it launch

this game's player count is 99% copelords by volume. eventually they'll give up on trying to pretend it's worth playing

not sure i like the map system compared to OSRS. most of the charm was the huge open world.

it's also kind of annoying to have to confirm 2-3 times to initiate combat.
DUCK Nov 20, 2024 @ 9:59am
similar-ish grind. but very different game. more so if thinking osrs, than RS3.
J Nov 20, 2024 @ 10:05am
This is probably a lot more like RS3 than OSRS, though it feels a lot more grindy, the XP scaling is a bit rough here compared to OSRS tho.

Once you hit around 20+ in lets say fishing. you'll feel it, and then you have only 6 fish before you have to wait for them to respawn etc.

I also think the quests are pretty irritating, you unlock them but it doesn't tell you that eventually you'll need like 50 alchemy etc... and it was already a long grind to get from 20-25 fishing lol. Hopefully they will add a quest requirement at some point.

OSRS is a combat RPG that has skills in it.

Brighter Shores is a skills game that has combat in it.
