But I think it would be a bad idea to go in expecting it to be like an alternative to Runescape. The progression system in particular is completely new, and you will be confused if you go in leveling up expecting it to be like Runescape. It is very different, and I'm not sure if anything really compares to it.
As for the feel, there are elements of it that reminds me of the magic of Runescape. From learning the skills, exploring the world, and picking my own path, it gives me the same feeling I got when I first started getting into Runescape years ago. It is a rare feeling and really good. Your mileage may vary, but if you like the vibe of Runescape, it may be worth a try.
Then you hit a mark where you don't feel like you're making any progress, because their's nothing to aim for.
No raids, no dungeons
Combat is the exact same no matter your level, just reskinned npcs.
No mechanics to keep you involved
Skills feel afk but not afkable
Smithing is basically 3 skills; one to make weapons for each classes (once again feels pointless)
Some skills are the exact same but with different name (gathering for exemple).
That said since there's nothing to work for (except skill capes, i guess?) i could see this game struggle hard to retain a playerbase.
It can not be overstated how well the launch went. Even day 1 had absolutely zero issues to my knowledge. That isn't just rare, it's completely unheard of, especially nowadays.
We're living in a time where not just MMO or competitive games always have launch issues, even singleplayer stuff does, all the time. We expect a rocky launch with frequent dc's and queues at this point, so this was very surprising and refreshing to witness.
TBH i think it's due to the low player count;
I never saw it go past 20k
Other MMOS got over 100k people rushing the servers right away as it launch
it's also kind of annoying to have to confirm 2-3 times to initiate combat.
Once you hit around 20+ in lets say fishing. you'll feel it, and then you have only 6 fish before you have to wait for them to respawn etc.
I also think the quests are pretty irritating, you unlock them but it doesn't tell you that eventually you'll need like 50 alchemy etc... and it was already a long grind to get from 20-25 fishing lol. Hopefully they will add a quest requirement at some point.
OSRS is a combat RPG that has skills in it.
Brighter Shores is a skills game that has combat in it.
