The fish you need to store for cooking can be stored there.
flounders and stuff are ment to be directly sold to the merchant.

You can store (some) fish in the ingredients cabinet in the kitchen. I'm not sure if other fish count as like, potion ingredients, but if they do they'll be able to be stashed in the ingredient cabinet in the potion shop, etc.
