Brighter Shores

Brighter Shores

Don't release like this, redo the maps
All the gameplay you've revealed makes the maps look like its just a series of interconnected claustrophobic hallways. Its absolutely soulless. You can't release like this man. Part of what made runescape special was the immersiveness of the map, but the way you're handling the maps is currently just not working.

Your game has been in the oven 10 years. At the end of the day, what's another year in the oven? You only get one release, don't blow it.

i do agree with this, the tiny little maps are just strange in 2024, like if this was early 2000s i understand, but in 2024 to have these tiny patches of playable area is very odd and at the very least not very appealing to the eye. Its probably one of the reasons this game wont have any PvP cuz the way the maps are made im not sure how it would even work, hell there hardly seems to be room for mobs let alone player interaction, yeah i dunno, just a very strange and in my opinion wrong decision to make the maps this way.

Personally, I find the smaller rooms kind of charming. I'm not sure how it'll feel when actually playing the game, but I'm willing to give it a shot despite it being different from what us RuneScape veterans are used to. Brighter Shores is definitely aiming to be its own thing with a bit of inspiration taken here and there and I welcome that.

You assume that all the maps will be tiny, while in reality we don't know anything about their size outside of this bit from the recent interview[www.gamesradar.com]:

Q: How big are the rooms in terms of how much time you'll spend in one before moving on?

A: That's something we mathematically worked out. We've sort of assessed, what is the maximum amount of time between clicks before it starts getting boring? What is the maximum amount of time you should spend in one room before you need to go to the next, you need to go off and bank your stuff, you need to switch to a different activity, or you need to go to the shop to buy something new? And we've very carefully set all those times based on gut feel, admittedly, but they're not random. They're all carefully, carefully balanced to be just right. So just as you're thinking, I'm getting a bit bored of doing this now, which actually isn't very long, you need to stop anyway and you need to go off and do something different.

If y'all want an example of a room-based MMO, take a look at Ragnarök Online. Believe me, the maps can still be massive, with a lot to explore, and any individual "room" can range from an actual room to a huge chunk of landscape full of buildings, hidden passages and interactive items.

Andrew yesterday did a small showcase of how the room system works, its very tiny maps or rooms whatever u want to call them, like rly rly tiny, im sure he would not just show these if it wasnt like that across the board since this was him specifically replying to people asking about this issue and he chose to show those clips

I personally like the map idea - its something different and unique. I play games these days to experience new cool ideas and mechanics. I dont want to play yet another clone - so let Andrew cook. He delivered a masterpiece - the best thing we can do is give him a chance to show that his new vision is.

whats unique about it? its just a tiny map space... I hope that i am wrong and other ppl as well, but so far a lot of things revealed just seem very anti MMO, the small map spaces, does not seem to have any PvP, limited players can be seen on your screen at one time per that tiny map space, this seems very very very dumbed down game and i hope im 100% wrong because i would love to grind it.

i dont think TS is wrong tho, from what gameplay we have seen, the maps look horrible, its 2024, who wants less vs more these days? Everyone is asking for more, larger maps, more player interactions, more things to do, more quests, more ways to interact with friends, this game seems to be going like pantheon route with some strange old school fetish but instead of being cute about it, it seems to have chosen all the unattractive features for the game, like tiny rooms, limited players on your screen per room, no pvp, game does look soulless as TS has mentioned, and hes not the only one, check any comment from any video that mentions this game, its a common theme.

I actually like these type of games and i hope it succeeds but its very hard to get into it when you are in a 1x1 size room everywhere you go with 1 mob in there. Hopefully its just like that from spectators perspective and will feel much better once you can actually play it or more game play gets released, i have high hopes for the game, but i dont think what some ppl are saying like TS are wrong.

It's a ridiculous request.

I want the developer's vision of their game. I am happy with less, many people are. Elden Ring taught me that bigger maps aren't always a good thing.

It doesnt have to be something as drastic as "redo the entire game cuz i dont like it" it could just be something like zooming out the camera a bit more, maybe its only zoomed in for the trailer, like i said before, playing developers vision of the game and acknowledging a clear disconnect between them and some players is not the end of the world, hopefully at the very least with later additions they might consider making them a bit larger

I appreciate greater art direction than graphical fidelity any day of the week. As a Souls fan, I can get lost into a world by the imagination a developer's art while the graphics are subpar. With that being said, as a person of this audience I would love to see more of the world Andrew is building because I find it mystical and adventurous. No need for a large map to be an MMO and instance areas are fine as long as they aren't Bethesda Game Studio amounts of them. I am looking forward to seeing what more there is about this title and I see the audience Andrew is trying to appease here with this product.

yeah, open world map of runescape was fun
but, this looks like a box. tiny little box
John Columbo May 5, 2024 @ 8:03am
I thought about it a little, and realised that you could make the argument that Runescape also had a "room system". While you can see the world, you can also only see or interact with characters that are nearby. The edge of your game screen is the "room".

It's not like there will be loading screens or anything. The video showing seamless transition between rooms shows that. (Though that might not be the case for travelling between larger map areas, but you get that with Runescape too.)
OwNzOr May 7, 2024 @ 5:07am
I don't mind the rooms, but they did feel very small during the video showcase where he ran through some city. It's still not the finished product so there could still be changes i suppose. Personally i'd like it better if the rooms were just a little bigger, maybe he could group 4 rooms together to be the same instance, but i don't know howmuch more work that would take.
