Fishing impossible

Tried multiple times to "hook" a fish, but the bob/hook in the water slightly drags any fish that causes one of two animations, even being very patient to see if there is perhaps a third animation I'm missing which will actually lead to hooking and reeling in a fish, no luck.

Tried at multiple locations, with the group of fish further away and right close to the fishing spot, when they are close they migrate to the bob just making it difficult again. After a few tries of starting to 'pull' them in, they just group away.

Looked everywhere for a guide including here on steam and no go.
Am I missing something or is the mechanic completely broken? Or am I just doing something wrong, or just not patient enough? Seriously seems broken at this point. Much easier to get fish by going clamberry.

I just started to hook them whenever they nibbled twice, then started to circle the mouse to reel them in. Works most of the time and at all locations. If you accidentally scare them, you just have to wait until they come back and nibble again.

Look for the BIG splash before attempting to hook then reel like crazy.
As Porcelain mentioned, we give you little warning nibbles first before the big one.

Wanted to add that the actual bite sounds different than the warning nibbles, too. It makes a deeper "Splonk" noise than the nibbles. So I mostly go by sound now.
