To toss my bits in for you in a vague order, run through starting character's first 3 pages of Lore (maybe even cycle through 1 page each before starting loop for 2nd page) to build up card choices and aiming for their Ultimate nodes in talents. That should get you some card choices over the course of doing it and prepare for bigger pushes as well as unlock more characters. Once you unlock Augustine, aim to max him out to get his Mythic Sword Arts card, and then always use that card for every character for every build pretty much because it's just that good.

Then repeat pushing first 3 lore pages and talents towards ultimate nodes for character's up to Lena which should help expand your reroll/banish pool to something more practical and useful.

Character wise at this point the overpowered ones available to you are Doridori (Damage around Damage Reflection and survivability), then Aldreya (Damage built around Movement Speed scaling). With decent cards that fit their damage gimmick they can carry you through everything in the game so far compared to where other character's will start to struggle at things in Ancient Ruins stages.

You should have Benimaru and Vera after getting the character's up to Lena done. Benimaru is a glass cannon mostly like Aldreya, but can similarly easily mow down everything on the screen once you get his ultimate talent node and complimenting cards. Then there's Vera who after you get her to her ultimate node pretty much wins the game and is practically a cheat code (in my opinion at least). Just equip her legendary card from doing her lore, buff her health with cards like Totem of the Ox, and terrorize everything. You are now the end boss and can go farm gold, achievements or anything else with her to help fill out more talent trees for the other less fortunate characters.

For weapons and normal builds, I typically stick with projectiles since so many bosses have nearby AoE's that make you have to stay away making your own AoE attacks pointless. So like Boomerang Daggers as a must along with it's skill, Air Blast is probably the hardest hitting weapon in the game and Chain Lightning is nice, then you can get some wiggle room to play around with things as you get more comfortable.

Also if you haven't gone into the map screen, there's buildings and alters around that are the events and can give you more weapons/skills/gold that aren't readily apparent.

Hope that helps.

To emphasize certain points that were made, try to get every character's lore page 2 done, that should unlock their ultimate node. Once you have the ultimate node allocated you'll get the passive bonus which will grant you rerolls and bans which are very important to cut down on RNG. Rule of thumb with these types of games is ban first then reroll, if you ban first then it can't show up in a reroll so you potentially save yourself. Second is the kwent cards, get S rank on all of the missions if you can, this unlocks the weapon mod kwent cards. I would say once you get Aldreya, you can basically complete everything while using her, I did. Check the achievements to see what rewards you can get for completing certain things, I only cared for the kwent cards since the coins isn't nearly enough to make a big difference. I won't say which weapons and kwent cards I find most useful since that should be something you figure out on your own but I will say that when you unlock kwent card slots they unlock for every character so don't hesitate to open them up and go in with your four most useful cards.

EDIT: Remember to do two things while doing your runs, first is decide what you want or are okay with having as weapons or skills and fill them up so you don't see a lot of rolls with nothing to upgrade and maybe only weapons or skills you don't want. Second is to "kill" your choices, I say killing the choice for when I max out a weapon or skill so it won't show up anymore, this can help as well so you also lower the pool of things that pop up.
