You are correct, Sir !! There are 4 parts to the "ORBS" story.
The Orbs of magic group originally was sold on four separate CD's. Thus the planned release on Steam as four chapters. Less work for the Dev, don't you know. HOWEVER, given the Dev's long absence from Steam forums and non-response to cries from Gamers, it seems highly unlikely the 3rd & 4th chapters {Lost Orb + Darkthrop Prophesy} will see the light of Steam's day.
That being said, the Aveyond "Orbs" games play well and any you may miss on Steam may be acquired directly from Amaranthia.com.
You should [but don't have to] play Lord of Twilight before trying Gates of Night. Although each game may be played independently, you may miss some background from an earlier game. By design, the gamer may save an earlier Aveyond Orb Game into the intended Sequel. A Sequel game may start either from such an inserted save-game OR by starting a New Game.
