I feel like people are over reacting to the DLC
Look, I get it. Its a casual game, the game cost $10, it feels weird for a game to cost $10 and then have DLC for the same price.

But lets take a look at Path of Exile 2, which went into Early Access recently for $30. In that game, every cosmetic is anywhere from $40-120, and I somehow have not seen anybody complain about that pricing. I personally think thats a god awful business model when they've already made upwards of 3 million for people buying access to the game already. But I digress.

Sure, a DLC costing the price of the game is a bit high, but its $10... Are we really acting like the devs are some insane money hungry monsters for charging the price of a big mac meal for a model that they clearly put a decent amount of work into? Its a fully unique model, it only makes sense that it would cost more than the other DLC, which are just a recolor and a sweater over your suit.

And I do get that people feel its "gatekeeping female models" but the base suit is pretty damn androgynous. Space suits arent made to accentuate any genders physique, and I feel like thats why the eyes are useful for customizing and making your character seem more feminine or masculine. I can understand the frustration, but I feel like the reactions to the DLC are a huge overreaction by a mile. And while I do hope they add some free extra options for people to unlock through a progression system or some sort of earned currency, that remains to be seen.

Just stop vilifying the devs for trying to add something they worked on to the game and get some money to continue supporting development. Legit most Fornite skins started off costing $10-20 and they used to be a very small game at the start.

At the end of the day this probably wont convince anyone to stop whinging about the DLC, but I just wanted to give my two cents. :temluma:

Unfortunately, the devs don't want your two cents, they want your 2 crisp 10$ bills.

Joking aside, the issue is the game has ONE map and the same old tasks. Their updates make the game less fun, and now they want to charge 20$ for half baked cosmetics. Just because PoE or Fortnite fans are okay getting shafted, doesn't mean I have to be as well.

I agree that they needed to do a bit more with the game, maybe add a new map, have a few free earnable cosmetics, before just dropping the DLC. But $10 really isn't "getting shafted".

$10 is reasonable for any game out there. I swear people expect games to be cheap and then everything to be free. Like, devs gotta earn a living, and with how this community is being over a dlc, Im sure the game is on its way to the grave.

Like you said, I feel it's too early into the game's lifecycle to be adding DLC. But you gotta understand that this game had a Kickstarter too that helped fund them. They already got an initial amount of money funded and then they quickly used it to make a paid DLC. Sure it may not be a whole lot of funded money, but that's still money that should've prioritized working on the base game from the start. And as someone who actually backed the Kickstarter, I'm a bit disappointed.

The kickstarter only raised $10k not enough really. I think the DLCs were overpriced. If all three were in for $5.99-$7.99 I think would have been taken better, not $20 and they are not compatible with each other. The fact they are charging $10 for a fem skin is a pink tax and a money grab, considering where the Tiphanie skin is stored in the files is more proof of this. Waifu really Mirage Labs?

I do think they need to make the colors able to be used in tandum with the other DLCs, but making the sweaters and any other cosmetics they plan to release, work with every model they plan to release would require a lot of coding that really needs to be in other areas of the game. Also I'm sure they will release other models for the game in time, the first one being a female model doesnt make it a pink tax. Im sure when they add others, they will also likely be $10, which I feel is fair for a seperately modeled skin.

I think the main issue people draw, is that the game costs $10 as well. If the game were free to play, most likely, nobody would care. But the game also cant be more than $10 because at its core, there really arent any social deduction games that go over that.

You know it is funny there was also this little indie game that was able to add on maps and colors without having to charge for it, you might know it, it was called Among Us. Now yes they did eventually get into the paid pass scene, but that was LONG after it was established and started to take off. They were able to add colors, make the maps up to 15 and make more maps and they didn't charge a thing, but hey, go ahead and shill out 20 dollars to an early access game that may not ever get out of Early Access for stuff that can be given for free. IF and it is a big IF people really think they should charge for this $2.99 at most is maybe okay, everything else is laughable.

Among Us is a far more simplistic and, to me, less enjoyable overall as a social deduction game. Not only that, but it is a far simpler game to add things to. It takes a lot more effort to 3D model, render and rig characters and create new maps. Among Us makes sense to add little paid passes that dont cost all that much overall, because its quick little doodles of a hat or an outfit. They arent fully modeling a stylized character. Its quicker to crank out especially when half the paid passes are usually outfit color variations.

If this game happened to blow up like Among Us did (a mix of the popularity it got during the pandemic as well as it being incredibly simplistic so that people who dont really play games could pick it up and enjoy it with friends), I think it would be a far different story on how the DLC and other implementations are added.

Devs stated themselves that they are learning as they go and arent experienced in coding, so Im okay with cutting them some slack while trying to figure it out. As I honestly think they have a better game on their hands than what Among Us and quite a few of the generic clones bring to the table.

Honestly, I dislike the $10 DLC they added, but if you're ok with it that's also fine. I'm honestly fine with an androgynous space suit, especially since you can change the femininity/masculinity with the eyes. That's besides the point though.

Among Us IS simplistic, but you are downplaying the creation of the game. Even though it's not 3D, it still takes time to do 3D AND 2D (this is coming from someone who does both). It takes time to draw and animate specific shots and make the 3 initial maps they had. Some of the developers were even working on Henry Stickmin while working on Among Us.

We should still cut the devs some slack as I'm sure they're working with limited funds with a decent size fan base. But, you should also acknowledge that some of the criticisms are valid. I don't think people are overreacting about an unfinished game with 1 map having 3 paid DLCs already. (And I'm not including the dev road map they put out earlier). Things probably would've been smoother if the devs explain they need more funds so they're putting out a DLC for fans who wants to help fund the game.

Yeah, I admit its not so much all the DLC that is being overreacted to, I just find the idea that its gatekeeping being able to be a woman, kind of an absurd exaggeration. I do think quite a few criticisms are valid, as I think the colors being sold for $5 and not working with the other DLCs is a bit of a misplay. And I agree that it could have gone much smoother with some communication on the reason for the DLC while addressing the plans for a new map. But I also get that as new devs, everything is a new learning experience for them, so there are bound to be blunders in terms of interacting with a wider audience.

Also you are right that Among Us is still a lot of work to create, its not some MS paint map that was whipped up and had integration working super easily. Im just saying I dont think its fair to compare the two and go "Look look, they didnt charge me more than x" because at the end of the day, there is too much going into it for it to be a simple cut and dry method for pricing vs effort and experience.

It is a pink tax because the only overtly obvious fem model is now behind a $10 paywall.
