Additional to the Gems, you need Magic Jams (1 or 3, depending of the item) to pay for more stronger variations of the items, I will stick for now with the Pike Ball, it offers some defense alike to a certain option arrange for Gradius III...

Still, I started by upgrading the whip first, because that's the weapon that I use the most. I will upgrade the other weapons last. But it's up to you.
