OS X Yosemite Pairing Instructions
1. Connect your controller via mini usb.
2. The first pair screen will ask for your computer password, put it in.
3. Hit enter until you get through the first pair screen again, ignoring all other instructions.
4. Hit enter until you get through the first pair screen one last time.
5. Press the circle PS button, if it asks for a password hit cancel try steps 2,3,4 again.
6. Once you press the circle PS button and it doesn't ask for a password (you will also notice the flashing dots go back to a slow blip quickly) then you can disconnect the controller and press the circle PS button, it will stay on.

Notes
- I had one controller that didn't want to sync no matter how hard I tried, turning off bluetooth and turning it back on helped.
- The only way I found to turn the controllers off was by turning off bluetooth.
- The controllers will not show up in the bluetooth screen.

Yup, the in-game pairing instructions step through all of this. Let us know if they could be clearer somehow. (Unfortunately, we we mention in the Pairing Utility, you have to try pairing twice on 10.10 before it works. The reason has to do with Bluetooth permissions on 10.10).

btw, you can hard turn off PS Move controllers if you hold the PS button for ~10 seconds.

But you should also be able to disconnect them from the Bluetooth menu in the top toolbar....

I've finally got my Move Motion controllers talking to my Mac running 10.10.1. I was trying and failing to make the initial necessary hard-wire connection using mini USB cables I had handy - but I didn't get results till I used a mini USB cable from a SONY PS3.

THE PROBLEM: I never get past the point where the Bluetooth Pairing Request does not ask for a pairing password.

I know I'm meant to keep trying till it works, but I've tried using 4 different controllers with at least a dozen attempts on each one. Clearly something is amiss, any advice?

So, gothamoddisee, I'm not quite sure what behaviour you are describing.

Does it hold on the "Waiting." screen forever, or is it passing that screen without asking for your credentials? If the latter, is any error returned, or does it appear to pair successfully.

Whichever way, a log file might be useful in diagnosing the problem, if (after a run including some attempts to pair a controller) you could send a copy of the file at ~/Library/Application Support/sportsfriends/log.txt to support@gutefabrik.com referencing this discussion that would be great.

The problem: Once I get to the step where I hit cancel when asked for a pairing passcode (all previous steps were successful), the sync light on the Move controller begins to flash and nothing else occurs. Occasionally I'll get a 'Pairing Unsuccessful' dialog box on my screen, but I seem to be stuck here. I've sent the log to the email indicated. Thanks for your help!

So, the logs you've sent suggest that, as far as the game is concerned, your controllers have paired correctly. It could be that the Bluetooth address of the computer isn't getting written into your controllers somehow, it does seem that some USB cables cause problems with this, so if you have other cables you can try that would be worthwhile.

I'm still not sure exactly the behaviour you are normally seeing. Do you ever see the Pair Success screen at all?
gothamoddisee Dec 30, 2014 @ 6:49am
As far as I can tell, I have never received a pair success screen at all. Additionally, the controller never makes it to the Bluetooth device list in System preferences. At most, while the controller is syncing it will briefly appear in the Drop down menu in the top of the screen. This occurs after I hit the PS button on the move controller but immediately disappears once I hit cancel on the pair passcode screen. Having tried three different mini USB cables including one official Sony cable, I'm not sure what else I can try.

I spent about an hour trying to pair my move controllers to my mac running 10.10.1 as well. My mac always asked for a password regardless of how many times I tried to pair it. I suppose something changed with the 10.10.1 update.

I eventually discovered that pairing the move controller to my ps3, turning off the ps3, and then pairing the controller with my mac using the Joust process allowed me to connect the two successfully. If you still get the password prompt, start the process again by paring to the ps3. I don't know why this process works, but it completely bypasses the password input prompt when done successfully.

If you have multiple move controllers, I recomend doing the whole process one controller at a time, as I still got to the password roadblock if I tried doing multiple controllers at once. I also recomend turning off the PSU switch on the back of the ps3 after shutting it down normally just to prevent the move controllers from turning on the ps3 again by accident.

Hopefully this works for you. And hopefully you have a ps3 within easy access lol. Let me know how it goes. Good luck!

I can confirm that pairing is indeed broken in 10.10.1 and that the only workaround is exactly how Brian H. describes it above. I'll try to make a how-to video later today to demonstrate the process if I have time later today. Otherwise, let me just extend my deepest gratitude by saying: YOU THE MAN NOW DOG BRIAN H.

Ok, so after further testing, I think you can get the Move controllers to pair with the new version of mac without a PS3. I was able to get a controller to pair just by running the process over and over and over again. However, it seems incredibly random if and when it pairs.

P.S. Played it last night and had an absolute blast with people who were avowed "non-gamers." This game is just pure inclusive awesomeness. Also, I hope to stop by MAG fest today and try out the huge 30 person game!

Thanks Bill - this gives me hope...

I know it may seem redundant, but since this such a particular and tenuous process, would you mind sharing that video or a step by step list of how you got it to work? I've been at this for weeks and still havent gotten ONE of my 4 brand new controllers to work...

Hey all,

We're back from MAGFest and Jonathan is looking into this.

Pairing works reliably on all 10.10.1 machines we've tried, so this is really tough for us to debug. What we're going to do is try to track down more 10.10.1 machines and see if we can reproduce.

To start, a dumb question: are the controllers' batteries charged enough? Like, did you leave them connected to mini USB charging for a while before pairing?

Also, what model is your Mac? (see: http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201300). If you can report that I'll see if it's one we've tried (and if not, track that model down).

Thanks for the reply, your commitment to solving this is really encouraging. Here are my deets: MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011).

All four, brand new controllers were left charging overnight before I attempted the sync. I should also mention that I've tried EVERY method listed previous to this post in this thread including syncing the controllers to a PS3 first. All to no avail.
Jonathan  [developer] Feb 5, 2015 @ 8:56am
So, I upgraded my MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2013) to OSX 10.10.2 (not skipping 10.10.1 didn't seem to be an option). Still seem to be able to pair successfully.

So, no proof as such, I don't suppose any of you on 10.10.1 can upgrade to 10.10.2 to confirm that the issue isn't resolved on apples side; it's not completely implausible that something they did in the 10.10 to 10.10.1 update caused us issues.

Failing that, I guess we need to consider the possibility that it's particular models of mac that are struggling. LGBT Bill, Brian H, don't suppose you could share your mac models with us? See http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201300

Hey guys, we're right now doing the Nordic Game Jam and came upon pairing issues on 10.10, (and 10.10.2). I tried both the psmoveapi pair utility, and the GUIfied one coming with JSJoust. For me it hanged at the moment it waits for the blued process to terminate and it never happens. Eventually solved it by going to the Activity Monitor and quitting the blued process manually (quit, rather than force quit).

Step by step instructions:
1. connect ps move by usb
2. run the pairing utilty
3. when it hangs for more than a minute, go to activity monitor, search for "blued"
4. quit the process. if the process reappears right away, try quitting again, until it dissapears from the list (for me usually 3-4 try).
5. enter system password when prompted
6. press the ps button, it should appear in the bluetooth list and not ask for pairing password.

After that, the pairing should be done.

Keep in mind that our issue was that the pairing process hanged at the blued termination. Some people here are describing different symptoms. Hope it helps.

Hey! We are at NGJ too, and struggling with the issue. michailnenkov's solution works, and the pairing utility says we have paired the controller, but when I try to reconnect it again by clicking the Circle button, the Mac asks for the code (and of course the Move is not gonna give me any!).

Any idea?
