What is the best build for this game?
Should I go with melee or should I be a ranger? How about magic class and their attuments?

No best builds as at the end of the game you will be almost with all skills at maximum. It depends mostly on which items/weapons available now. Melee build without needed attunements unlocked for example will be almost useless.

Mage is a personal favorite of me, it naturally seems to be the best build for the game

I finished the game on hard, fire mage rocks along with attunement :) Ranger bowman comes next.

I agree with the fire mage build! I'm currently trying out a water mage but soon dropped it since the effect (freezing) seemed very underwhelming -it didn't often triggger.
I'm curious about air though lightning seems cool so I'm trying this next.
Melee build kill everything. I played this game a few years ago with many many variations of playthroughs. And when you unlock spell to kill anything with 10% chance with one hit - that something.

Also Longbows-build is pretty strong. Idk man, if you played well, after 50% of game your build could be or such a bad, or totaly good. Depends on your luck and knowledge of game.

The game play is slightly different in this game, unlike other RPGS the roles are not watertight. Different set ups work in different maps and against different bosses monsters. It is important to unlock talents from Heavy armour and shield are essential, it helps you tank. If you are not using them then you may have to run around a lot kiting the enemy. Then pick a strong weapon that has speed and good critical hit. With this set up you could take almost all the bosses except the last solider guy. But you can kill him with one hit if you have the right talents unlocked.
You need AOE damage for arena where a group of gladiators would chase you so it is best use mage skills here.
Carry a fire staff it is better among the all elements. (the last talent is very strong but you only need it to kill one boss). The fire element would not do damage against bosses that have fire based build.
Earth element is also a good pick you can kill the old guy with it. Plus you would get all the talent upgrades much earlier than the other elements. But this will not work well against one of the final bosses.
In short, melee with heavy armour along with other talents that gives you survivability (clock and other things) would make your game easy.

I'm not sure about that. I know only two situatons where you need one Heavy Armor's perk. It's name is "Invincible" or something like that. Its give you invulnerability to enemies critical damage. And only two bosses in the game could be really easy with that perk. And thats only one reason to use heavy armor. In all other situations its absolutely usless.

I played last run with almost 100% perks run and as usuall, most usefull after you came to the Kyalisar was Lonbow build. Mainly Imperial Storm Longbow and Imperial Earthed Longbow. After that Sura's Lonbows as well and all perks for damage - Mainly: "Might", "Deadeye", and all Lonbows elemental perks. And you're good to go.

Also Melee Build is kinda powerfull. But mostly in endgame cause you need some of rare gear and some of perks for that, like "Berserk", "Way of the Warrior", "Might"(as well). And also one of mightiest perk of game for Normal Melee - "The Death Touch". Its give you 10% chance that you'll kill an enemy with a single strike. No matter who is enemy. With "Berserk" its overpowered.

But Yeah - for early build you could play as Mage mostly, mainly "Fireball" and "Tremor" very effective till you came in Kyalisar. But I prefer to play as I described before.
