I've found alt-tabbing always makes the game not openable again in Win 10. But the crashes after battles stopped after I used XP SP2 compatibility and changed my desktop resolution (outside the game!) to 1600X1200@60Hz. I also run the program using CursorLock to confine the mouse to the game properly.

This other fella already wrote how to do that, so I'll just quote him. =)

To go into Windows XP Service Pack 2 compatibility mode, right click on your shortcut icon for Imperial Glory. Then go under "Properties" and then click on the "Compatibility" tab. From there, you can set the game for various compatibility modes. I usually run Imperial Glory under Windows XP SP3. This fixed crashes that I had when the game started crashing after battles.
